Flawed but worthwhile

Overall, a worthwhile primer on BPM but this book also has some serious flaws. When you see a title such as “Ultimate Guide”, you would think no other materials would be necessary – this isn't true with this work. Here’s my overall review in PIN (Positive/Interesting/Needs Improvement) form:
Positive:
• It’s not about the technology. A realistic perspective on the challenges of implementing BPM from an organizational perspective.
• Provides organizational change recommendations for supporting a BPM initiative.
• The “pitfalls to avoid” is worth reading through several times.
Interesting:
• The book does not delve into the evolution of specific frameworks and practices. For example, readers of Michael Porter’s “Competitive Advantage” will immediately recognize it as the source for the organizational value chain (Figure 12). Those with a software engineering background will recognize CMMI as the basis for BPMM. Neither Porter nor SEI are cited in this work; perhaps this isn't necessary because intermediate derivations of the originals are cited, but I found this interesting.
Needs Improvement:
• This book would be better if more example artifacts were presented. It references a website associated with the book, where I had hoped to find such examples, perhaps an errata, and links to some of the source material mentioned in the book. It’s not there - the website is basically advertisement for the book, which is pointless since I have already purchased the book.
• The book has a “self-published” feel to it; it would benefit from proofreaders and editors. For example, page 41 lists 4 key roles within a BPM Center of Excellence, and goes on to describe two of those roles. It doesn't describe the other two, and it feels as though the author intended to describe them but forgot those paragraphs. There are other areas where it seems as though the author was writing, got distracted, and then came back later to continue working. Hopefully a second edition will pass through a “read aloud” check before publication.

Focuses on the organisational aspect and fails to explain what the day to day work looks like

Disclaimer: I am not a BPM professional.
To be honest this book has left a mixed impression on me. I expected it to provide me with a clear idea of the kind of work a BPM professional peforms but it instead focused on explaining how a BPM initative can be introduced in the company. To be fair, it does a great job there. It goes in the great detail on how to organize the process, which people to hire and how to get political leverage to introduce BPM into an Enterprise company. The key here is Enterprise because from what I saw none of the suggested approaches would work in small or medium companies as they all require significant resources and dedicates staff members.
The problem for me was that there is not a single case study describing how a BPM professional improved existing processes to save resources and make processes more reliable. So, while I have a very clear view of how one might introduce BPM into an Enterprise from an organizational standpoint the book didn't help me much to understand what a BPM professional actually does after the BPM initiative and Center of Excellence departments have been introduced. Just to clarify, the book gave me a high level overview by listing the service CoE provides to the rest of the company but it didn't explain how that looks in practice when you get down to actually doing the work on some concrete case.
I feel like the book would be mostly useful to someone who has done work on a BPM initiative or is already familiar with how to map and optimize processes in a large company but is not sure on how to organize it from a more bureaucratic point of view. Inclusion of some case studies would help a great deal in making it useful for the rest of us.
Additional Note: This might be more of a personal preference so I'm putting it on the side but I didn't like how the author took an absolute view of certain things. Several times across the book it talks about how one should not try and invent their own processes or change in any way what was outlined in the book. It also mentions several times that any tool not using BPMN standard should be discarded and in general anything not endorsed by the Object Management Group should be ignored. I understand that those are currently considered best practices but it seems silly to take it as absolute truth considering the book itself talks about things which used to be best practices in the not that distant past but are now abandoned (TQM or BPR for example).

I am currently head of BPM project in company with more than 3000 ppl.
I came across this book accidentally.
The book is very easy to read and provide hints on where the hot spots might arise when you try implementing BPM in your organization.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone in starting phase of BPM implementations.
In addition, Theodore also suggest sources where you might look for additional information (especially those topics that book doesn't cover).
Few remarks / comments:
1) Book should focus much more on governance model, change requests mgmt , etc...I find this crucial when setting up BPM in your organization.
2) IIt would be great if author covers more in details how BPM and process transparency can actually speed up / or help organization when implementing large new IT systems...
