If indeed Jesus was an ardent practicing Jew and preached only to Jews, why then did classical artworks depict Jesus and his fellow Jews as blond, fair-skinned Gentiles? Why did artists transform a community of orthodox Jews into latter-day northern European Christians? Starr takes the reader on a fascinating journey through Medieval and Renaissance art (including a walking tour of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art). He argues that the ethnic cleansing of Jesus and the world around him —so vividly depicted in hundreds of paintings—created a powerful platform for anti-Semitism. Contributing to this was the fact that throughout much of their history Christians were forbidden to own, read, or translate their Bible into a native language, which prevented them from discovering the firm Jewish foundation of Christianity. If the populace had access to the Gospels, says Starr, they surely would have noticed that the “multitudes” of Jesus’ followers were Jews. Starr then turns to the crucial question, “Did the Jews kill Jesus?”—a charge that has echoed with deadly consequences since the crucifixion. Carefully scrutinizing the Gospels’ account of Jesus’ arrest and trial and the events leading up to them, he arrives at a startling conclusion, one that is certain to provoke wide discussion and debate. The accusation that Jews killed Jesus is at the root of virulent and enduring anti-Semitism. What might the thoroughly Jewish Jesus have said to church leaders, monarchs, and other despots who launched murderous acts such as the Crusades, the Inquisition, and genocides in his name? Starr tackles this question in a mock trial, in which Jesus asks these perpetrators, “How do you justify your violent acts based on my teachings and mission?” Mindful that many Christians today are eager to let go of long-standing antagonisms, Starr courageously appeals to fellow Jews to drop the “Jesus Phobia” and accept Jesus as a faithful Jew--without having to embrace the claim that he was the Messiah. Jesus Uncensored: Jesus a Jew From Birth to Death

Whether one is a Jew or a Christian, the Jewishness of Christ is an uneasy subject, prone to extra caution with political correctness.Over every discussion there looms the question:"Who says?" Dr.Bernard Starr, in his Jesus Uncensored addresses this question with depth, seriousness, meticulous research, and an easy accessibility by a scholarly or recreational reader. "Your Bible says it," he answers, quoting from passage after passage from the New Testament. Whenever Jesus is seen he is seen either speaking in, or on the way to a Synagogue; whenever he is mentioned, he is referred to as a Jew. He is born to Jewish parents, is circumcised, is given a rite of Dedication to The Temple; makes the bi-annual prescribed pilgrimages to The Temple in Jerusalem with his family, remains a pious, practicing Jew throughout his life, and is executed by the Romans as a Jew. Jesus never intends to start a new religion. His aim is to right social wrongs and to bring peace to a violent world. Dr. Starr takes great effort to substantiate his every point throughout the book with the original sources. An especially interesting part of this work is the museum walk Dr. Starr takes us through, showing us the step by step Christianisation of Jesus through the arts in the centuries following his death. The book is an unexpectedly easy read!

I found your book provocative in a healthy and meaningful way, well reasoned, well researched
and written with sincerity, integrity and humility. This is a debate that has waited for millennia
for such a voice as Dr. Bernard Starr whose book seeks to right a long and terrible untruth. Dr.
Starr's research reveals who is responsible fro Jesus' death, and also vindicates the Jewish people
of this horrific crime. Dr. Starr's personal journey and new found understanding speaks to truth,
and reminds us that Jesus was a pious and practicing Jew, that he spoke mainly in Synagogues,
and never sought to start a new religion. His mission was and remains to bring a lasting peace into
the violent and warring world. He courageously invites both Christians and Jews to join in open
dialogue and discussion, in order to restore healing and justice to the faithful practioners of both of
these world religions. It is time to end the historic injustice and incrimination of the Jewish people
who are innocent, and to accept the Jewishness of Jesus who came to bestow a lasting peace
among all humanity. Let us take the first steps to making peace among us, and for the world.

Truly Fascinating Stuff You Didn't Know You Didn't Know!

I became aware of this book through reading several of Bernard Starr's articles for the Huffington Post, which I always enjoy. His writing is always a wonderful combination of heart and mind, with a nice subtle sense of humor thrown in there too. I was definitely intrigued by the title and subject of this book, and having been familiar with his writing, I thought it would be an easy and interesting Summer read. Though once I got into it, I realized it was far more interesting than I even thought -- it's downright fascinating!!! Some parts were even truly riveting!!! Having read Starr's bio on the Huffington Post site, as I was reading this book, more and more I was aware of how he really taps into his talent and experience as a college professor, as he presents countless enlightening facts about Jesus in the kind of way that a favorite teacher in college whose class you actually enjoyed and never wanted to miss, would. Starr's also a psychologist, and I could feel that advantage too, as he not only has a very clear sense of compassion and empathy for those who he writes about, he also does something that I especially love -- he has a way of putting the reader right in there, that kind of reminded me of the early 1970's Saturday Morning TV show 'You Are There!' hosted by Walter Cronkite. Only Starr takes that 'You Are There' device one step further, so that I suddenly found myself not just reading about these great iconic spiritual beings as historical figures, but Starr had me experiencing true empathy for those he writes about from a deeply human and very real, practical point of view that I never considered before (he does this several times throughout the book). For instance, here I was suddenly empathizing with a pregnant grieving 'Rebbetzin' whose superfamous husband was just crucified -- who just so happened to be in a town where Temple thugs were on the hunt for 'me' and my unborn child... I never once thought of Mary Magdalene in THAT way before!!! Or even as a Rebbetzin! Or about Jesus as a Rabbi! This book will clean your glasses so you'll see Jesus in a way you too might never have before. And at the end of the day, perhaps you might even want to know more about Jesus and the Apostles and Mary Magdalene and even John The Baptist (and baptism in general!), and you might even want to go on to explore Jesus' words of divinely tapped-in wisdom he offered to everyone, that transcend having to do with any religion at all -- just good, solid, practical and priceless life lessons and teachings for every human being, coming from a great being who walked the earth, and embodied the most truthful and highest qualities of love and devotion to God and mankind. Both Jesus, and this book, are most definitely worth checking out for spiritual seekers and people of all religious beliefs!
