Quantum Phase Transitions, by Subir Sachdev

Describing the physical properties of quantum materials near critical points with long-range many-body quantum entanglement, this book introduces readers to the basic theory of quantum phases, their phase transitions and their observable properties. This second edition begins with a new section suitable for an introductory course on quantum phase transitions, assuming no prior knowledge of quantum field theory. It also contains several new chapters to cover important recent advances, such as the Fermi gas near unitarity, Dirac fermions, Fermi liquids and their phase transitions, quantum magnetism, and solvable models obtained from string theory. After introducing the basic theory, it moves on to a detailed description of the canonical quantum-critical phase diagram at non-zero temperatures. Finally, a variety of more complex models are explored. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics and particle and string theory.

Review
Of the First Edition:
"Taken as a whole, this book is something of a theoretical masterpiece. With its tight organization, the book leads the determined (and theoretically inclined) reader on a tour encompassing some of the most challenging yet beautiful topics in contemporary theoretical physics...Virtually every chapter contains a theoretical 'gem'...The equations are manipulated with flair and elegance that are testimony to Sachdev's talent as one of the world's premier theorists."
Physics Today

"With this very useful pedagogical supplement, I expect this second incarnation of Sachdev's volume to remain an indispensable reference and crucial tool for researchers in this field, and an invaluable resource for instructors preparing their advanced graduate courses related to this topic. Sachdev's revised and expanded textbook contains a wealth of information, both on quantum-critical phenomena and the mathematical tools needed to describe them theoretically, and will certainly remain a prominent if not the standard reference to the subject for both novices and experienced active researchers in the field."
Uwe C. Tauber, Mathematical Reviews

"The book is well written from a pedagogical point of view and hence suitable for non-specialists. On the other hand, it can be used (some chapters) by graduate students as well."
Farruh Mukhamedov (Kuantan)

5/5 Stars
By Nicole's Book Blog
"The Probability of Miracles" isn't an easy book to read, but it is an absolutely beautiful debut.

The story is about Cam, a seventeen year old girl with cancer. She's just been informed by her doctor that there's nothing else they can do to help her, that the best she can hope for is a miracle. Her mother, Alicia, refuses to give up, however, and soon they head off to Promise, Maine - a place that is said to be magical. Along the way they visit her grandmother and her best friend, Lily, who is also battling cancer. Although Lily and Cam speak daily, Cam finds herself dumbfounded when Lily reveals she's met a boy, Ryan. When Cam finds out Ryan has a girlfriend and he's messing around with Lily on the side, she flat-out asks if he intends on breaking up with his girlfriend for Lily. When Cam tries to explain to Lily what Ryan told her, Lily decides she wants nothing to do with Cam anymore.

When they finally do reach Maine, Cam finds herself unable to believe in hope, love, and miracles - everything her mother and Lily want her to believe in. But when she finally opens up, she begins to rethink everything.

I absolutely loved Cam. She's sarcastic. She's funny. She seems real. Everything that she goes through: falling in love for the first time (Asher), dealing with the loss of a friend, and accepting that her family's lives will continue without her - it all feels real. Same for the other characters. Each and every character in "The Probability of Miracles" is flawed, but that makes them more realistic. For example, Cam's mother, Alicia, isn't the perfect mother by any standards, but you can tell she loves her daughter and that she's terrified of losing her. That final scene between the two of them - it's a beautifully written moment.

There are plenty of humorous moments through out "The Probability of Miracles", mainly thanks to Nana and Cam, but this isn't a happy story. It's a story about a young girl trying to experience everything life has to offer before it's too late. Expect tears when you finish. Lots of them.

Let me start by directing you towards the author's name. Wendy Wunder. Book about miracles. Now, I may not be one to believe in miracles, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a good coincidence. (And enjoy a name pun. With the initials `A.K.A.', I think it's a requirement.)

The Probability of Miracles (thankfully containing no actual math) leaves it to the reader to decide whether the strange things that happen are truly miracles or just odd coincidences. Campbell Cooper, our sixteen-year-old dry wit protag, is prone to erring on the side of caution. There are no miracles. Cam's had a pretty bad run of life--her parents' divorce, followed by her father dying from cancer, followed by her getting cancer . . . and all while living at the Happiest Place on Earth. That's right: Walt Disney World, where Cam's mom, Alicia, works.

Alicia believes in miracles, though, and when Cam's cancer is deemed a lost cause ("What you need is a miracle," says Cam's doctor), Alecia packs up Cam and her younger sister, Perry, to spend what will likely be Cam's last summer in Promise, Maine, where there are flamingos and purple dandelions and sunsets that last for hours. Maybe here, they will find Cam a miracle. Even if it isn't the one anyone is expecting.

I read The Probability of Miracles in one night. I looked up when I had finished to see that it was suddenly eleven at night--and I still hadn't written anything for NaNoWriMo that day. It's just the tiniest bit super enthralling that way.

Cam may be an undeniable pessimist, but she's the nice sort of pessimist--the sort that's pessimistic because, well, she's dying (just a bit of a bummer, that), but at the same time recognizes her pessimism and occasionally tries to lighten it up a bit for Alecia and Perry. I adore Cam. She's witty without seeming overdone; witty to a spoken degree, rather than to a writer-sitting-at-a-desk-has-all-day-to-think-of-a-clever-line degree. She tends to go off the deep end rather often. She makes crappy choices. She's dying after all, and finds herself trying to fit an entire bucket list into a few short months. While I may have occasionally thought she moves too fast and is too unsupervised (dare I say: where are the parents in YA?), I never found myself disliking Cam, or thinking ill of her because of her choices. Wunder has done a remarkable job of keeping Cam believable and identifiable, even as she dies of cancer, even as she makes some remarkably bad decisions.

This is in part because of the quick pacing of the novel. One event quickly moves on to take the place of the next. There are days-long gaps in between chapters every now and then. Time passes quickly. There aren't many real obstacles. Characters decide to do something; characters do it. It seems rushed for a moment, then you remember that it's been four days since the last chapter ended-there has been time for x, y, and z to be planned--the author has just skipped over that phase, because frankly, it'd be boring to read and the book is 350 pages long as is. I didn't notice until I was halfway through the book that Cam, Alicia, and Perry still hadn't made it to Maine. The 350 pages go quickly, and because Cam is so likable, anything unrealistic or overly quick melts into the background. A lot happens in those 350 pages, but I never questioned any of it, or how easily each new event came-characters decide to do something, characters do it. No questions asked.

A bit grim and a bit serious at times (have I mentioned how the main character spends the entire book dying?), The Probability of Miracles still comes highly recommended. Keep some chocolate on hand and a good chunk of time set aside to finish it in one go, if necessary. And now I leave you with one last horrible name pun: it'll be a miracle if stores can keep this book on their shelves! Ha. Ha. Ha.

Hobbitsies Reviews: Bitter, snarky, heartbreaking
By Tara Gonzalez
I knew before reading The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder, I would cry. But I just didn't realize how much. The Probability of Miracles is seriously intense.

Cam, the protagonist, is biting and sarcastic and witty and real. She's got this terrible disease that is killing her, and she's walling herself off from the world with sarcasm and anger. She doesn't want to let the cancer control her, and the struggle within herself is reflected beautifully in everything she does and says in this book.

All of the characters, for that matter - her mother, her sister, Asher...I just loved each and every one of them and I hurt for them, having to watch Cam go through this.

And oh my god, the story. It's painful and heartbreaking and I just ached for all these characters. I literally cried and cried and cried.

The Probability of Miracles is a beautiful debut full of real characters with real and terrible problems. But it's almost a story of hope, a story about living, if that makes any sense.

If you're looking for a fantastic contemporary that's sure to make you feel something, definitely check out The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder.

Revelation Commentary (The Bible Believer's Commentary Series), by Dr. Peter S. Ruckman

This commentary on the last book of the Bible is done in a simple, easy-to-understand, freehand style. In this work, Dr. Ruckman presents the dispensational, premillennial teaching found in the book of Revelation, bringing to light a vast amount of prophetic material not covered in works by other orthodox expositors. Because of its simplicity and content, this commentary has for years been one of his most popular books.
As in all of his works, Dr. Ruckman approaches the book of Revelation with absolute, implicit trust in the Authorized Version of 1611, and with nothing but indifference or contempt for those who think they are smart enough to tamper with it.

Excellent
By Shirley Masaoka
Instead of eating/partaking for the TREE of Knowledge of Good and Evil...the school most "learned scholars" choose to sit under, Revelation, be Dr. Ruckman uses Scripture to tell you what is meant be the word. It makes it easy to understand and explains what things really were, are, and will be. Many prefer not reading Dr. Ruckman for he tells it like it actually is not what he believes, or like others who say: "the Greek or Hebrew really means..." Reading his books, and I have most all, gives you a true insight into the Holy Bible. (Hint: Like the Four Gospels is showing four different aspects of Jesus Christ, Dr. Ruckman helps explain how Revelation goes through the Tribulation four different times from four different viewpoints.) If one were to read his books as he uses scripture, one will know more than most who go to seminary and other colleges! They will learn what the Holy Bible really means what it says; says what it means without other views of man's opinions.

An Absolute MUST HAVE!!
By Morgan1611
This is definitely one of Doctor Ruckman's best works. If you are a Bible-believer that really wants to have a deeper understanding of God's word, you should own this book. The first time I read it, I was amazed at how much this book helped to "open up" other parts of the Bible that I did not previously understand.

If you want to really understand the book of Revelations, this book is something you should get. It is a long commentary but it is very interesting and helps you piece the controversial book of Revelation together. You may have to read this book more than once to understand all the details and exactly what he is teaching but it is worth the time. A definite must for anyone interested in the truth.

Economic Growth. How it works and how it transformed the world, by Edward A. Hudson

How does economic growth work? Beginning with the history of leading countries over the past 2000 years, 'Economic Growth' finds which countries have achieved sustained growth and how they did it. The effects of growth are examined on a human scale. The benefits of growth are enormous in terms of life, health, education, leisure and opportunity, while the downsides can be managed by appropriate policies. 'Economic Growth' develops a new theory of growth. This new theory is based on careful analysis of actual growth; it covers the causes and mechanisms as well as the results of growth. This new theory extends conventional theory by operating at the industry level and by placing demand considerations at the forefront of growth. Demand growth based on product innovation, marketing, credit and the consumer society drives the economy forward while supply growth based on investment and process innovation sustains the growth in spending and incomes. Growth is not automatic but, in the right conditions, demand and supply expansion work together to generate sustained growth. 'Economic Growth' offers a new view of growth, unique in its combination of historical depth, intellectual clarity and practical relevance. Its original insights will interest academic and professional economists, while its comprehensive treatment and lucid explanations make it an excellent guidebook for anyone interested in economic growth.

Review
The distinguishing features of this book are the depth of its historical material; its rich detail about individual industries; and the balance in assessing different views of growth. After the historical sections, the reader has the background needed for a mature evaluation of growth theories, and the author guides us through such an evaluation. He does not appear to have an ideological ax to grind or a special clever point to make, which makes the book credible and valuable for anyone interested in the field. Many discussions of growth focus on technological innovation, but make the concept seem mysterious. Solow referred to the residuals that capture this innovation as 'a measure of our ignorance.' This book uses concrete examples of industries and how they developed, such as the U.S. auto industry, to help us see the forces behind generalities in other work. In the end, the author advances a strong conclusion: economic growth is the greatest thing to happen in 3000 years. Some economists make statements like this based on ideology. This author earns the right to draw such a conclusion with his meticulous and balanced development of evidence on the causes and consequences of growth. --Laurence M. Ball, Department of Economics, John Hopkins University and National Bureau of Economic Research.

A valuable synthesis of literature on the sources of economic growth and, simultaneously, a challenge for more research on the relationship between technological change, economic growth and social transformations. --Diego Comin, Department of Economics, Dartmouth College.

About the Author
Edward A. Hudson (PhD, Harvard), working with Harvard s Dale Jorgenson, pioneered computable general equilibrium models in the 1970s. He applied these models to understanding the energy crisis and to analyzing energy policies. Dr Hudson then moved to strategy consulting, advising corporations and governments in the United States and New Zealand. This included advising on the great deregulation carried out in New Zealand in the 1980s and 90s. He has now returned to researching and writing on economic growth.

Exceptional book: Worth the price and effort to read.
By Rcatesq
This book is written with precision, clarity and impressive conceptual focus. I am not an economist but my legal/history background appreciated Hudson's use of economic data and theory to integrate economic causation analysis with historical perspective. His broad view of historical change in the context of evolving economic theories was often illuminating.

Although there were a few areas(e.g., government decisions regarding currency devaluations) that perhaps could have been addressed in more detail as to impacts on economic growth, Hudson manages to thoughtfully cover many complex issues.

I would think this book would be of value in many MBA programs as well as a worthwhile addition to the library of any serious reader.

Tells the story of economic growth
By NEbodyhome
A book about economic growth that covers the historical and human elements, so it's as much the story as a presentation of theory. An approachable reference because it includes a section on key economic thinkers and their theories.

Nero and the Christians
By Paul McGrath
The Christian v. lion's story has been around so long that it has pretty much become a kind of myth. It is a phrase one brings up in order to illustrate some point or other, but is hardly ever thought about in historical terms. In fact, Christianity itself sometimes seems as if it is becoming a kind of myth. The left doesn't take it seriously, and bashes Christians for being intolerant and condescending. But Christians, in their haste to retaliate, often act intolerant and can be arrogantly condescending. The sense of what it means to be Christian seems to get lost in all of this.

Quo Vadis takes us back to the days when Christianity was fresh and new and shows us just what kind of world it was then that caused such a movement to flourish. This alone would make it an excellent novel, but it works wonderfully on all levels. The characters are superbly drawn, the setting is realistic, the plot crackles along, and, perhaps most importantly in a novel with this subject matter, it never becomes preachy or didactic, instead maintaining an objective perspective throughout.

Rome was the greatest of the ancient empires, yet despite all of its glorious achievements, it was truly a barbaric place. The concept of human rights was non-existent. Slaves--of all races--were property, and could be used in any way one saw fit, including the most vicious or depraved. The rule of law, while discussed in philosophical terms, was only sporadically and occasionally applied. The law instead came and went at the whim of the powerful, and if the powerful happened to be someone like Nero--the ruler of Rome during the course of this novel--then the law was sadistic, cruel, wicked and unpredictable.

We see the effect that living this kind of society has on the two main characters of the novel, both of whom are members of the upper crust: Petronius, a courtier; and Vinicius, a military officer. Petronius, as Nero's confidant, can never let his guard down. He must flatter, cajole, deceive and manipulate Nero every minute of the day, for his very life depends on it. It is a life, "drained and listless and detached," as we are told in the first sentence of the novel. Vinicius falls in love with a captive Christian female, and through his love we see how Christianity changes his life. But it is an unbelievably difficult and dangerous undertaking--with the demented presence of Nero and his sycophants looming over everything--to form an attachment with a person and then a cause such as this.

It gradually dawns on us how the Christian movement began in the first place, and why attempts were made so mercilessly to stamp it out. Instead of dishonesty and cruelty, it called for honesty and kindness. Instead of privilege for the elite, its promises were made to all. Instead of arrogance, it preached submissiveness. Perhaps most importantly, it simplified one's life, and allowed one to live without fear.

Rome is burned, possibly at Nero's orders, incredibly, so that he can experience suffering as he believes a true artist must. To divert the anger of the Romans, he blames Christians. Thousands of men, women, and children are rounded up, put in dungeons for months, then on successive festival days were crucified, burned alive, mauled by gladiators, and, as we know, attacked by wild animals. Their fate is so hideous that in time even the jaded Romans became sickened by it.

These historical events, and the actions of the characters during them, are what make up the bulk of the novel. To say the least, it makes for very compelling reading; indeed, some parts are difficult to bear. And as mentioned, it is presented in a very objective way. Not all of the Christians are presented sympathetically--one, in fact, is a fiery, all-will-be-damned type--and not all the Romans are presented harshly. The noblest character in the novel may very well be Petronius, who uses his influence as much as he can to alleviate the suffering he sees around him. And although he recognizes to some degree the power and decency of the movement, he himself does not wish to become a Christian. He can not abide the idea of being required to love his fellow man, most of whom--the unwashed, ignorant mob--he detests. He is a magnificent creation.

The book is a real eye-opener, a good reminder of what the world was like before the birth of Christ, and a sobering reflection on what being a Christian truly means. At the same time it is also a superbly researched and entertaining piece of historical fiction, and the kind of thing for which historical fiction buffs are constantly on the alert. Great stuff.

(I should mention that this review is of the Kunizak translation.)

Best Work from Nobel Prize Winning Author
By Robert Salita
Shame that this Nobel Prize winning author isn't better known in the English speaking world. Sienkiewicz won the Nobel Prize for his epic writing, Quo Vadis being his best know work. This is a magnificent novel. I love its strong plot, heroism, and visualization of the Roman period. Truly one of the classics of literature. No need to take my word for it, just consider the Nobel Prize committee's enthusiasm.

Kindle 2 formatting is good. No Table of Contents or jogability.

A magnificent work of art
By Aphrodite Incarnate
"Quo Vadis" is the kind of novel one simply must include on his shelf. For those who don't believe me, it won the Nobel Prize--and actually deserved it. In my experience, lots of books, although unworthy of receiving even a single positive review, have gotten awards. But the main reason you should read this splendid novel is because of its wonderful storytelling, compelling plot, beautiful imagery, and great characters. To boot, it wasn't very difficult to comprehend, even though it was written more than a century ago. Despite the fact that I cannot understand a shred of Polish, I know that Kuniczak's translation is an absolutely superb one, and that both he and Sienkiewicz are first-rate novelists.

What I particularly loved about "Quo Vadis" was Sienkiewicz's wonderful attention to detail and imagery. His writing style was so lyrical, poetic, and sense-evocative, I could clearly visualize what he was describing, and for the first time ever, I felt like I was actually *seeing* everything: the wild, drunken orgies of Nero's debauched reign, the city of Rome burning, the coliseum packed with rowdy citizens and sweaty gladiators. People enjoy reading books that provide a vivid visual picture of the setting; I know I do. It is also very evident that Sienkiewicz did his homework and researched extensively for this historical novel.

The characters are what drive the plot--and they certainly do that in "Quo Vadis." I found myself liking a few characters and hating several others. And it is interesting, because when I realized that this novel was about Christians in Rome during Nero's time, I had expected Sienkiewicz to have portrayed each Christian as a kindly saint and all the Romans as decadent louts. I was surprised that not every single Roman was depicted as wicked--the honorable Aulus and his gentle wife Pomponia, for example. And not every Christian was a saint in this book, with Crispus, a fervent follower of Christ, seeming to me somewhat intolerant and very narrow-minded at times. Of course, there are some characters who are pure evil; Poppaea, the golden-haired, manipulative wife of Nero, is "evil incarnate," as Sienkiewicz describes in his novel, and (in my opinion) it is difficult for anyone to like Nero.

The core of the plot is a love story between Vinicius, a young Roman tribune, and Ligia, the beautiful Christian girl with whom he falls deeply in love. Vinicius loves Ligia so much--not merely for her beauty, but her virtue and purity--that he actually converts to Christianity, and we see a prodigious transformation in him, from a decadent, pleasure-soaked Roman courtier to a caring and benevolent Christian. Petronius, Vinicius's uncle and another main character, is painted magnificently as well. Although Petronius does not become a Christian like Vinicius, he seems the sublimest character in the novel; he does whatever he can to lessen others' suffering (especially his nephew's) yet still, he cannot bring himself to love everyone--which is exactly what the Christian faith preaches. Petronius is a worldly Roman noble with an eye for beauty and good taste, and he is also the emperor's confidant, called the "arbiter of elegance" at Nero's court. Despite the impact Christianity has upon his life, he cannot love the dirty, recalcitrant mob for which he has such contempt.

"Quo Vadis" has everything you would want in a great novel: a stellar plot, sublime characters, lively dialogue, and graceful prose. It is a truly laudable novel of epic proportions--something to stay on my shelf beside the classics.

The Jew In The Medieval World: A Source Book, 315-1791, by Jacob Rader Marcus

To gain an accurate view of medieval Judaism, one must look through the eyes of Jews and their contemporaries. First published in 1938, Jacob Rader Marcus’s classic source book on medieval Judaism provides the documents and historical narratives which let the actors and witnesses of events speak for themselves.

The medieval epoch in Jewish history begins around the year 315, when the emperor Constantine began enacting disabling laws against the Jews, rendering them second-class citizens. In the centuries following, Jews enjoyed (or suffered under) legislation, either chosen or forced by the state, which differed from the laws for the Christian and Muslim masses. Most states saw the Jews as simply a tolerated group, even when given favorable privileges. The masses often disliked them. Medieval Jewish history presents a picture wherein large patches are characterized by political and social disabilities. Marcus closes the medieval Jewish age (for Western Jewry) in 1791 with the proclamation of political and civil emancipation in France.

The 137 sources included in the anthology include historical narratives, codes, legal opinions, martyrologies, memoirs, polemics, epitaphs, advertisements, folk-tales, ethical and pedagogical writings, book prefaces and colophons, commentaries, and communal statutes. These documents are organized in three sections: The first treats the relation of the State to the Jew and reflects the civil and political status of the Jew in the medieval setting. The second deals with the profound influence exerted by the Catholic and Protestant churches on Jewish life and well-being. The final section presents a study of the Jew “at home,” with four sub-divisions with treat the life of the medieval Jew in its various aspects. Marcus presents the texts themselves, introductions, and lucid notes. Marc Saperstein offers a new introduction and updated bibliography.

From the Publisher
First published in 1938, Jacob Rader Marcus's classic source book presents 137 documents that deal with individual Jews and the Jewish community during the Jewish Middle Ages. "The Jew in the Medieval World" is unique for its sweeping view of Jewish historical experience from late antiquity until modern times, with introductions and annotations that make those sources accessible to the general reader. For this new edition, Marc Saperstein has updated Marcus's ninety-six bibliographies, providing references to the most recent scholarly research on each topic. In his cogent introduction, Saperstein analyzes and evaluates Marcus's decision regarding periodization, organization, and inclusion. In so doing, he offers valuable insights about the implications of those decisions for our own understanding of Jewish history.

Jacob Rader Marcus served as Adolph S. Ochs Professor of American Jewish History and Milton and Hattie Kutz Distinguished Service Chair in American Jewish History at HUC-JIR, Cincinnati and founded the American Jewish Archives.

amazing
By Michael Lewyn
This amazing book has 96 primary sources - excerpts from books and essays by and about pre-emancipation Jews, discussing topics as varied as Christian and Muslim oppression of Jews, Jewish religious law, Jewish false messiahs, and Jewish education.

Some of the more interesting things I learned:

*That Christian oppression of Jews began almost as soon as Christians took over the Roman Empire. Just a few years after Constantine (Rome's first Christian emperor) took power, he issued relatively mild decrees against Jews converting or intermarrying Christians. A Jew who converted and circumcised a non-Jewish slave could be subject to capital punishment. A century later, Theodosius actually prohibited Jews from erecting new synagogues.

On the other hand, as late as the 1750s Frederick II of Prussia prohibited Jews from establishing private synagogues, and sought to regulate exactly which prayers Jews could engage in.

*Just as Jews sought to distance themselves from Christians, Christians did the same. A 300 Spanish church council prohibited Christians from eating with Jews. And in 325, the Council of Nicaea changed the date of Easter to ensure that Easter's dating was not dependent on the dating of the Jewish Passover. (Some early Christian communities, by contrast, celebrated Easter on the first night of Passover).

*The sheer diversity of Jewish customs over the centuries. Some Jews today think that the most distinctively dressed groups (such as the Hasidim) are the most "traditional" or "authentic" Jews. But a 1748 essay describing Shearith Israel (a still-prospering New York synagogue) writes that "Both men and women were dressed entirely in the English fashion; the former had all of them their hats on." (I visited Shearith Israel a few years ago, and today, hats are still more popular than in other shuls!) . Another essay describes Shabbat dinner in Alexandria, Egypt in the 15th century: Jews drank cups of wine, alternating with fruit, and did not start eating meat, etc. until they had drained six or seven cups!

*In the past as today, Jews struggled with observance, especially while traveling. From a 1748 description of New York Jews: "They commonly eat no pork; yet I have been told by several men of credit, that many of them (especially among the young Jews) when traveling, did not make the least difficulty about eating this, or any other meat that was put before them..."

*The amount of internal self-government in some Jewish communities. In 1637, the Jewish leadership of Lithuania held that in order to prevent Jews from overspending on marriages and other festive occasions, a local rabbi should "consider the number of guests which it is suitable for every individual, in view of his wealth and the occasion, to invite to a festive meal."

*The backwardness of a few Jewish communities. For example, the memoirs of Solomon Maimon describes his elementary school in Mirz, Poland as follows: "[His teacher] was the terror of all young people, `the scourge of God'; he treated those in his charge with unheard of cruelty, flogged them till the blood came, even for the slightest offense ... When the parents of these unfortunates came to him, and took him to task, he struck them with stones and whatever else came to hand, and drove them with his stick out of the house . . . All under his discipline became either blockheads or good scholars." Of course, the book contains an ample selection of essays about Jewish leaders who ensured that better contains prevailed.

I haven't read a lot of Sourcebooks, but this is the best I've read on any subject. A True classic and an absolute requirement for anyone studying Judaism in the Middle Ages.

A selective review of the most pertinent literature is included in each chapter. The total reference listing for the book extends to 60 pages.

This work is necessarily multidisciplinary, reflecting the many dimensions of stress-related problems and their situation within a complex social context. Review

...a seminal document in the evolution of psychology. Those of us now laboring in any of the multiple fields he helped found will still find in this historic work ideas that enrich our thinking."

--From the Foreword by Daniel Goleman

"A seminal document in the evolution of psychology. Those of us now laboring in any of the multiple fields [Lazarus] helped found will still find in this historic work ideas that enrich our thinking."-- from the foreword by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, and Primal Leadership

"The most widely read and cited academic book in this field."--American Psychologist

"Positively enchanting....the book is ambitious, intends to be comprehensive, is addressed to a wide audience of specialty groups, and is deserving of attention by those who are interested in gaining a useful perspective on stress management."-- American Journal of Psychiatry

"A new book with Richard Lazarus as senior author arouses anticipation and intellectual excitement. Few researchers have devoted so much of their life-span to a concentrated analysis of the processes in stress and coping with stress." -- British Journal of Psychology

"Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman bring a well organized and unifying perspective to this untidy area of research. They present a theoretical framework for understanding stress, evaluate past research and alternative theories....All this is accomplished in a lucid style.-- Journal of Human Stress

"A long and detailed treatment of the topic, which will undoubtedly be of interest to all those working in the field of stress reduction, counseling, and treatment. Those familiar with Richard Lazarus's 1966 book Psychological Stress and the Coping Process will no doubt know the direction of the argument, and will not be disappointed in finding the same views elaborated, developed, and referenced." -- Behaviour Research and Therapy

"The careful and thorough presentation readily lends itself to research, clinical, and tutorial applications....The reader will find a provocative, well-referenced theoretical presentation of transactional adaptive interventions that involve appraisal, emotion, and coping strategies....From a pedagogical standpoint, the book is extremely well written. Each chapter is thoroughly outlined and an introduction and summary are included....The book could be considered not only as a source of information for past research on this topic but as an example of the development of a successful research program.....A welcome relief to a field in theoretical disarray. It will undoubtedly be a main, fundamental reference source for clinicians, educators, and researchers. Thus, it is a contribution that should be found on the shelves of all mental health investigators and professionals interested in this timely and critical topic. -- Contemporary Psychology
