Nice book

When I see how beautiful both of these people appear in this book it is so sad to think how it all ended so tragically.
That aside, the book has great content and postures that you can definitely try to use with a partner.

The only negative I have about this book and this has more to do with out it was produced than the substance of the book; is that many of the photos are cuts off in the binding of the book. That's not cool and it takes away from the photo. They need to make the photos fit the page so you can get it's entire essence.

Yes this was written by a couple that ended tragically. That actually has nothing to do with this book that was published years before he died. This book wasn't published afterwards to get money for them.

Wish this book was required for all CS majors

This is one of the most wonderful books on computer programming.

To use the musical metaphor presented in the book, the reader will be challenged to compose pieces ranging from simple melodies to full blown symphonies, in styles ranging from classical to modern hip-hop. While many of the examples are in what would be viewed as archaic languages, the problems themselves are agnostic to the selection of computer languages used. One of the lessons is that there is no single silver-bullet language, and it is best to learn how to select the right instrument for the part.

Each programming Etude is presented as a problem. Background information is given to aid in the composition of the solution, and for some of the puzzles there is a supplied example solution in the back of the book. A rough time frame is given (ranging from a few hours for a single person to a class team project that might take an entire semester).

The focus on each Etude is in the critical thinking required to develop the solution while the actual implementation is assumed to be already within the grasp of the reader. Again to use the musical metaphor, the reader is assumed to be able to play several musical instruments, understand scales, chords, and can read sheet music, and is now ready to move on to their own musical compositions.

Virtuosity at programming

Ages ago my instructor at the local university computing center gave me this book. After completing all etudes
I was accepted as an apprentice programmer at age fourteen. This is an exceptional book! It teaches you to think like a programmer. Unfortunately it has been out of print for more than a decade.

Greatest software engineering book

This is the most amazing book about software engineering I have ever read. While the book does not teach particular programming language, and does not include solutions in the code for most of the etudes, the great problems and possible solution makes you think about and understand lots of things about computer programming.

Beautiful etudes, great work in general.

About the Author
Robert C. Hill, a founder and honorary fellow of the Australian Catholic University's Centre for Early Christian Studies, was a distinguished biblical scholar best known for his prodigious talent as a translator of Patristic biblical commentaries on the Old Testament. Nearly 30 volumes of his translations have been published, many of them in the Fathers of the Church series. In recognition of this work in 2003 he was awarded the papal cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope John Paul II. Most recently, Hill translated the first two volumes in the new Library of Early Christianity Series, Theodoret of Cyrus's Questions on the Octateuch.

Excellent Introductory Book

I purchased this textbook for background use in a graduate level high temperature corrosion class. The book does pretty good job of explaining corrosion phenomena with lots of pictures and discrete steps. I found it very helpful for learning the basics of an unfamiliar topic. I learn by example, and I think this book could use more numerical examples with concrete equations.

I would recommend pairing it with David Young's "High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals" for an awesome book combination to well learn about high temperature oxidation and corrosion reactions.
