About the Author

Biography of Martin Aigner

Martin Aigner received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1965 from the University of Vienna. He then spent five years in the United States, the last two at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was introduced to the combinatorial world (which he has never left since) by G. C. Rota and the late R. C. Bose. After extensive travels he returned to Europe and spent three years at the University of Tübingen with a senior fellowship of the German Science Foundation. Since 1974 he has been a Professor of Mathematics at the Free University of Berlin.
Martin Aigner has published in various fields of combinatorics and graph theory and is the author of several monographs on discrete mathematics, graph theory and the theory of search.

Bringing dignity to enumerative combinatorics

Along with statistics, combinatorics is one of the most maligned fields of mathematics. Often it is not even considered a field in its own right but merely a grab-bag of disparate tricks to be exploited by other, nobler endeavours. Where is the glory in simply counting things? This book goes a long way towards shattering these old stereotypes. By unifying enumerative combinatorics under a strong algebraic framework, Aigner finally bestows upon the humble act of counting the respect it so surely deserves.
At first, it may be somewhat trying to make sense of his presentation as he reworks familiar results in this algebraic view. Often, I was left wondering why it is necessary to go through the trouble of all these high-powered techniques just to obtain results we've already obtained through much simpler means. However, as I progressed through the chapters, it became clear that the only consistent way to tackle the truly difficult problems in enumeration was with these algebraic tools.
If you are serious about combinatorics or merely interested in what combinatorics has to offer, this volume is certainly a valuable addition to your library.

About the Author
Jim Chung has degrees in Biochemistry and Dentistry from the University of Western Ontario and maintains a general private practice in Toronto. He has participated in two dental relief missions in the Caribbean and delivers advanced dental care to seniors’ homes on a monthly basis. Dr. Chung honed his mechanical aptitude by restoring vintage motorcycles and has been an amateur astronomy for the past decade with a strong interest in imaging. He is an advocate for budget-minded amateur telescope making and imaging and writes a regular column in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada to promote that agenda.

A wonderful introduction to spirituality

A wondefully accessible book. I love this man's perspective on life and spirituality - it was truly moving. This book took me by surprise. I would recommend to anyone interested in spirituality and exploring te possiblities life has to offer.

A great read

This is a book that you read effortlessly, despite the fact that it addresses some of life's most difficult questions. I was taken by the fact that Richard from Texas (the character that so many of us love from Eat, Pray, Love) wrote the forward and that Richard is a devotee of the mystic, Sadghuru Jaggi Vasudev, who is a co-author. I also found that I could easily identify with the other author Cheryl Simone, her trials and personal struggles, and her search for someone to help her make sense of this life. How fortunate she was to have the attention of her guru for a whole week - I had a chance to meet him at the Washington, D.C. launch of the book last week that I had learned about on the Isha Foundation website. I urge anyone who is a seeker to avail yourself of the opportunity to sit with him and listen to his practical wisdom.

Skip the first few chapters

I had hoped the chapters to have more Q & A sessions with Sadhguru but the first few chapters were about Cheryl and her life...

She often writes her chapters like a novel(why do I have to know which way the breeze is blowing?)...she needs to skip all the niceties and just focus on her questions with Sadhguru and share his insight with us..

Update: 10/25/2008 - I continue to be baffled at the 5-star reviews this book has garnered here...Granted, the reviewers maybe spell-bound but there isn't any new information in this book that most of you would have picked it up in your spiritual path...
