Send your sacred cows to slaughter.

So many self-improvement books pander to our emotions. We read them and are charged with an emotional high that usually lasts for somewhere between an hour and a week, then it's gone. We may retain a few tid-bits that we can throw out there every now and then that are useful, but for the most part, the reading public goes unchanged. In ONCE UPON A COW, business coach and speaker Camilo Cruz gives you actionable steps to put into immediate motion to bring about the changes you so desperately want to make in your life.

I myself am a leader, coach and mentor. I work diligently to stay on top of life, stay motivated and elevate others, but I quickly identified areas of weakness in my own life, the excuses I've used to hide behind, and ways to take positive action.

We develop our excuses (cows) at an early age. We use them, nurture and protect them, and even refine them until they are no longer excuses but a part of our own little reality. We finally wake up one day and realize we've led a very mediocre existence. We don't understand why, or even how it happened. Dr. Cruz will show you how to fix it.

This is a brilliant book. It is very entertaining with a good mix of anecdotal examples to prove the author's points, and it is a very quick and easy read. I stumbled across this totally by accident and am really glad I did. I highly recommend this one. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to my first ballroom dance class that I've been putting off for 3 years now. Life's too short to make excuses.

This book is inspirational and provides a practical guide to overcome barriers to achieve personal dreams. The author makes us to realize that perhaps our own way of thinking and attitude towards life are the only reasons we don't succeed.

When would you think that killing an only cow that provides support to an entire family is a good thing! Well, when you read the book you come to the conclusion that perhaps the cow was the roadblock that kept the family "save", unchallenged, and in the mediocrity.

A good-inspirational book, and easy to put into practice!

Great book for eliminating excuses

This book was a great quick read! Once Upon a Cow reminded me of "Who moved my Cheese?" Simple, straight forward and a great lesson: We must not allow excuses to rule our life. It is incredible how easy it is to pick up all of these excuses and justifications. I was particularly inspired by the story of Roger Bannister.

DAY 1: THE FIRST STEP
A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

The life of a single person can be emotionally turbulent. Our hopes and dreams about finding a lasting love sometimes send us soaring sky high. At other times, our confusion and despair over ever finding partnership can plunge us into an abyss. It's not surprising that many singles simply give up the search. Having experienced the turmoil inherent in setting their sights on a fulfilling love relationship, they decide, grudgingly, to lower their standards and make the best of their single state.
You don't have to settle for where you are, however. You can -- and will -- find and keep a lasting love if you work actively toward that goal. It doesn't require extraordinary skill or luck. It simply involves walking forward with both feet on the ground. Instead of allowing ourselves to fly up into the clouds or dive down into the caverns, we need to focus on making one small step after another toward our destination. As we gradually learn new attitudes and skills, the sheer momentum of positive change will help move us along.

A book of learning and reflection

This book can be read without its companion. What makes this workbook special is that it is meant to be read one page a time for daily reflection. The book has exercies for you, and asks you to make journal entries. The workbook has the potential to be a guide to help you learn about yourself, and what you will need from a relationship.
If you are a fan of these authors, I would highly recomment this workbook. I have found the IMAGO theory a valueable tool in learning about myself, and what I bring into a relationship. This book sits on my nightstand and has become a valuable part of my daily readings. I highly recommend the this workbook as the book did not delve into individual topics as this book does.

Meditations and Awareness

So far I am on Day 5. I like reading a short blip and then meditating with one of their mantras for ten minutes. Try to remember that Imago is the idea of eventually having a relationship and finding completeness within a relationship. They write as if during "singleness" a person is not complete. It can be bothersome especially if you enjoy being single. In any case, I am not one for meditating, but find these exercises interesting and valuable.

Not only for asthma, but also for colds, flus, and much, much more

If you've tried other breathing methods or yoga and found them too complicated or time-consuming, not to worry, the Buteyko Method is so simple that even children can learn it. And they do. In this book you'll learn how to do it yourself, at home. What's here is more than enough to get you started and give you a real foundation in the method. Using the easy-to-follow instructions in the book, in under 3 minutes, I cleared a stuffy nose and went to bed breathing freely and easily for the first time in days. And you do this sitting down, with no pills or sprays or anything. On top of that, by breathing this way, you focus better and your energy stays balanced much longer. For example, I used to feel sleepy after lunch, and would find myself yawning and ready to doze off for a nap. Now I follow the instructions in the book, and in less than 5 minutes, I am rested and ready to go. Another very nice benefit is feeling great upon waking every morning, even after having just six hours of sleep.

Works for sleep apnea too.

The information in this book is very powerful. It is also counterintuitive until you understand Dr. Buteyko's discoveries. For the past 20 years I have worn out three CPAP machines and a dental appliance trying to relieve my diagnosed severe sleep apnea condition. I believe the condition and the CPAP machines caused me to undergo three heart catheter ablation operations for persistant atrial fibrillation. After only three weeks using the information in this book along with some personal consultations with the author I am now breathing normally and free from using dental appliance gizmos and CPAP contraptions while sleeping. It is key, as another reviewer has said, that you do the exercises and follow instructions.

This is a very unique publication containing original texts by Dr. Buteyko. There are also texts by three other medical professionals explaining why and how the Breathing Normalization method works. The book offers step-by-step instructions on how to improve your breathing. To me it was extremely useful. I was able to stop most of my asthma trouble by following recommendations in this book. Anyone who has asthma can benefit enormously by reading this book.

An inspiration to step out of our comfort zone and become better people than we used to be

TinyBuddha.com is one of my favorite sites because it's the reflection of us as a community doing the best we can do to overcome challenges and to become the happiest and most successful we can be. Tiny Buddha's 365 Tiny Love Challenges is an invitation to step out of our comfort zone when peace/love/acceptance seems impossible. We can become inspired based on what other people have gone through. We're all in this together, so let's join the challenge!

Good, maybe not 100% applicable for me

I do really like this book, and gave it three stars because I feel like some days it applies, and other days it doesn't. Maybe I'm not pushing myself far enough, but there are days where I think to myself "Umm, that doesn't really apply, or I wouldn't gain from doing that..." I do really like the stories, though! And even the practice of reading it is a nice little meditation each day.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell (1946-2004) combined the inquiring nature of a research scientist with the soul of a caring teacher.  Ove his 30 years of teaching introductory biology to both science majors and nonscience majors, many thousands of students had the opportunity to learn from him and be stimulated by his enthusiasm for the study of life.  While he is greatly missed by his many friends in the biology community, his coauthors remain inspired by his visionary dedication to education and are committed to searching for ever-better ways to engage students in the wonders of biology.

 

Eric J. Simon is a professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College (Henniker, New Hampshire). He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in tropical marine biology and careers in science. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to increase active learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. Dr. Simon is also the author of the introductory biology textbook Biology: The Core and a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences at Clemson University (Clemson, South Carolina). After receiving her B.S. in biology from Kent State University, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. In 1984, Dr. Dickey joined the faculty at Clemson, where she devoted her career to teaching biology to nonscience majors in a variety of courses. In addition to creating content-based instructional materials, she developed many activities to engage lecture and laboratory students in discussion, critical thinking, and writing, and implemented an investigative laboratory curriculum in general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, 2nd Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

 

Kelly Hogan is a faculty member in the Department of Biology and the director of instructional innovation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, teaching introductory biology and introductory genetics to science majors. Dr. Hogan teaches hundreds of students at a time, using active-learning methods that incorporate technology such as cell phones as clickers, online homework, and peer-evaluation tools. Dr. Hogan received her B.S. in biology at the College of New Jersey and her Ph.D. in pathology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research interests relate to how large classes can be more inclusive through evidence-based teaching methods and technology. She provides faculty development to other instructors through peer coaching, workshops, and mentoring. Dr. Hogan is the author of Stem Cells and Cloning, Second Edition, and is lead moderator of the Instructor Exchange, a site within MasteringBiology® for instructors to exchange classroom materials and ideas. She is also a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Four stars because I don't like chemistry. But that's only one chapter. I got this book for my Bio class in college. It looks interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more. This loose leaf edition comes in a 3 ring binder and is cheaper than the others. But it is heavy!
