good messages both historical and inspirational

So tiny and inexpensive but so full of powerful information/messages. Who knew some of these hymns were created in the way that they were. I love the ones story about the lady who had lost her way of life and became an invalid. But she wrote one of the most inspiring hymns that impacted more people in a big way with a simple act than most active people do in a lifetime with more celebrated methods. Even her brother said she reached more people with God through that one hymn than he did in his lifetime in the ministry (paraphrasing). Love it.

Title is misleading: Should be called "Testimony of a Very Hard-Headed Man."

This book is mostly the personal testimony of the author, as well as his observations of others lives. How all our lives are shaped by our upbringing; how our fathers treat us, and how well they represent God to us as children.
Mr. frost was a tough fishing boat captain, turned teacher and evangelist, who lived by the "Love of Law" rather than the Law of Love, and he was a workaholic; never home, and when he was, did not know how to express love to his wife and children. The book describes how, through several powerful loving encounters with God, was transformed by the Father's love. What amazed me about his life, was how long I took for this transformation to "stick." He continually reverted back to his authoritarian ways, and had to eventually be transformed again.
Overall, I was disappointed with the book, because it dealt more with the author's personal struggles to escape the baggage of a strict, unloving childhood, and his own rigid, performance-based way of life. That this struggle took so long made me want to slap some sense into the guy. Very little time was spent actually describing "the embrace of a loving God."

Jack reveals much about his own life and his dereams for all mankind.

More specifically, he considers recursive methods often used when the structure of the Markov chain is upper Hessenberg, iterative aggregation/disaggregation methods that are particularly appropriate when it is NCD (nearly completely decomposable), and reduced schemes for cases in which the chain is periodic. One of those rare "readable" math texts

I can't believe this book has not been reviewed before! I grabbed this book and several others when trying to understand the usefulness of Markov chain theory for my dissertation. I kept coming back to this one because everything made sense. The book includes a late chapter on extensions of Markov chains that the author developed in conjunction with Dr. Chateau--these are so practical for computer scientists and engineers that I used them in the modeling and performance analysis of my own dissertation.

Yes, this is an older book, but if you are a student struggling with this topic in your own work you may find that a cheap, used copy of this text is just what the doctor ordered.

I purchased this product in good condition here on Amazon and was able to sell it in good condition on Ebay. It was not new, but because I needed it for a class it was functional, it had all pages and every page was legible.

Biochemistry text that leans more on the chemistry side...

This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon. Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts. 2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc) Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:

- Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.

- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)

- Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

Motivating and Sensible

This is a great book for anyone who is considering eliminating drinking alcohol from her life. The book is comprised of two parts: the first presents clear and compelling reasons why being alcohol free (AF) is not only possible but desirable. For anyone who wonders if she has a drinking problem, the idea of stopping drinking is terrifying. This book addresses the positives of being AF. The second part of the book is a series of case studies providing the reader with many examples of women whose stories will resonate and inspire.
"The Sober Revolution" inspired me to become AF and I am incredibly thankful to have found this book!

The analogy between alcohol and an abusive lover really drove home the points being made. It made it easy to see how alcohol had lied to me, and how it would soon suck the life out of me if I didn't end our relationship. Very helpful!

Grade 3-6. When his sculptor father is bitten by a cobra, Senmut believes that if he can carve a statue of the healer-goddess Sekhmet that will please her, she will help save Yuf. But as the boy works, he carelessly throws aside a tool, accidentally killing a dove. This thoughtless act, in the ancient Egypt Rubalcaba has re-created, means a death sentence for Senmut, unless the gods intercede on his behalf. They do, and instead of a quick death, the boy is sentenced to work in the mines, which will lead, he knows, to a slower, but no-less-sure, demise. How the protagonist escapes this fate and, by virtue of his talent and some good luck, survives to become Royal Sculptor to the Pharaoh, makes for an exciting and information-filled adventure. The details of daily life, customs, and beliefs of the people are wonderfully revealed through the words and deeds of the characters. The story has enough excitement to capture the interest of most reluctant readers. While several of the events rely on coincidence, careful plotting and foreshadowing prepare readers for some of the ensuing action. The prologue, for example, is told from the cobra's perspective and cleverly sets the stage for what follows. The places and objects are so well described that they can be easily visualized by children unfamiliar with Egyptian artifacts. A substantial glossary helps to identify and explain unfamiliar terms. Ironically, in his haste he accidentally kills a dove, a capital offense in thirteenth-century-B.C. Egypt, the setting of this fast-paced historical novel. Although the boy's life is spared, he is exiled to toil in the gold mines of Nubia, a life that is literally worse than death. His inherited artistic talent and--perhaps--divine intervention provide a surprising but plausible ending. Since there is enough plot here for a novel much longer than this slender adventure, some of its scenes seem truncated. However, the suspense never flags, and details of the period are so smoothly integrated that the action never slows, either. An appended glossary is useful and informative. Michael Cart

Great book for all ages

I read this to my 7 yr old. I personally enjoyed it and couldnt wait to read the next chapter. I recommended it to my 13 yr old. It'll be an ez read for her but its a great story.

A little dark but not bad

I am a really picky homeschooler, and I have been challenged to find wholesome books on Ancient Egypt this year. I approached "A Place in the Sun" with some hesitancy because I was very disappointed with "Maia of Thebes" and some of the other literature often recommended in the homeschooling catalogs I have. Either the recommendations are too dark and spooky, or too liberal and feminist. I have young boys, so I was looking for something that was not too challenging either. This is easier than "Cat of Bubastes" for example.

"Place in the Sun" worked for us ok. I wish it had been a little better---more uplifting tone, maybe, or not quite as stop-start in the pace---but I read it aloud to my 7 and 8 year olds, and they liked it all right. I think they sensed that a typical story on Egypt is not going to be light and lively. There's slavery in the story, punishment, and hardship. But the story works well for boys because the main character is a boy around that age, who has feelings a lot like theirs even though the setting is thousands of years ago. My kids are bright but needed a lot of interpretation of what was going on, though, so I'm glad it was a read aloud. If they had read it silently (which they could have because the vocabulary and length wasn't that challenging), I think most of it would have gone over their heads. They needed help with the culture gap (i.e. names of gods/goddesses, the way the temple and justice system worked, the sociology of cursing/pledges that went on) but they also needed help with literary devices (i.e. foreshadowing, time jumps, some symbols here and there). They got it, though.

Having read Rubalcalba's other non-fiction book on Egypt, I know she knows what she's talking about. She seems to have first hand knowledge of the civilization and I think my boys walked away knowing what living in ancient Egypt as a boy would have really been like. But as thankful as I am for that, it's a totally secular book with little to really make it a proactive good read. There's not even a moral really. I wouldn't seek it out, I guess... I would just use it if you needed it to fill a niche, like I did.

Couldn't stop reading this book.

A great read with lots of emotion. This book gave me a really good feeling of ancient Egypt and made me feel like I was there. I felt like I could have been Senmut because he was a boy my age and seemed to be like me. I learned lots about Egypt while enjoying the characters and setting.
