Interesting concept but it was just ok

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book. I couldn't put it down. As it approached the middle and the end I kept reading but just to get through it. I was hoping for some great ending with some big twist I couldn't predict but I unfortunately was disappointed. I would go into more detail but I do not want to give anything away. I think the idea has promise but in the end it was too difficult to put on paper and the ending was forced.

A satisfying SF thriller but not much more

I jumped into the bandwagon with this one, which is not what I usually do. Although I do not regret it, it wasn’t the groundbreaking experience that others felt.

Dark Matter is an easy, fast paced SF thriller, perfect for a weekend at the beach. This was ideal for me as there was where I read it.

Jason is a former scientist, current university professor who is married with a former artist, current art teacher with who he shares a child. They have a happy marriage although they both sacrificed their career for family. The action starts right away with the kidnapping of Jason by a masked individual who takes him to an abandoned facility, drugs him and leaves him unconscious. Jason wakes up in a lab, confused, without any memory of getting there. He realizes he somehow arrived in a different universe and does all he can to turn back home to his beloved wife.

For me, the highlight of this novel was the writing. Short paragraphs, sometimes phrases, sometimes only words. Using this device, the author succeeded to create throughout the book an atmosphere of tension and expectation. I had to turn the page to see what happens next.

The book proposes some interesting philosophical questions which I wished had been explored deeper. What is happiness? Are we really happy? If we took other decisions in life, would those make us happier or made us worse?

The science behind the story was almost nonexistent and that was a problem for me. The theory of multiverse is not new and I wished the author made use of this theme for other reasons than a plot igniter. I do not need a science treaty but I wish the author went a bit more in detail about the science of the multiverses. Moreover, there were some aspects that did not make sense for me.

Another shortcoming was the secondary characters. Amanda, for example, was there only for one purpose and after that function was fulfilled she became a burden to the extent that the author had to find a way to get rid of her.

All in all, it was a satisfying thriller that kept me at the edge of the seat (or sunbed) but nothing more.

Blake Crouch's best book to date

Dark Matter is the thriller you are not going to want to put down, and in fact, may not be able to. Blake Crouch has written good books before, but Dark Matter is his best, most complete, and most satisfying novel to date.

Dark Matter is the story of Jason Dessen, a university professor with a beautiful wife and son who goes out one night for a drink and wakes up in a different life. Not just a different life, but his own life, minus the wife and kid and instead of a teaching job, the greatest professional success in his field he’d ever imagined. Jason is desperate to return to the life he knew and be reunited with his family.

This book is a scientifically plausible and fascinating thriller with amazing concepts and page-turning action. What really grounds this book, though, are the strong characters and relationships. Jason tries to reconstruct what has happened to him and find a way back to the woman and son he loves. This takes him down a path that is both mind-blowing and thrilling. There are a number of twists and turns in this book, a few of which you might see but most of which will just blow your mind.

Dark Matter explores the choices we make and how these choices are both influenced by who we are and influence who we become. It does this in the context of a story filled with characters you care about and does it at a thriller’s pace. I enjoy a fast paced thriller, which this is, but the character depth is what takes this book to the next level.

Blake Crouch has written his best book to date and one of the best thrillers of the year. He’s displaying all his skills and joins some of the best writers in the field today. Fans of Harlan Coben, Michael Crichton, Joseph Finder and thriller lovers in general will find a lot to like in this book. If you’ve ever wondered about the road not taken, you’re going to want to read this book. Highly recommended!

In drei abenteuerlich-strapaziösen Reisen gelang ihm, was noch keinem Forscher vor ihm geglückt war: Er entdeckte den Ngamisee im Norden des ehemaligen Betschuanalandes, erforschte in einem 4000 Kilometer langen Marsch bis nach Luanda den oberen Sambesi, brach von dort zu einer Expedition quer durch den Kontinent zur Ostküste auf und stieß schließlich auf die nach Queen Victoria benannten Victoria-Fälle.

Required reading if you're on a tenure track.

Getting a doctorate or working toward tenure is an ambiguous meandering path that drives everyone NUTS. But Dr. James comes along and pulls back the curtain and says, here are the rules --follow them. One take away is when someone asks you to do something, consider "will this get me tenure?" if the answer is no, say no. Why didn't anyone else tell me that? Or that a tenure packet isn't for your current position, it's for the next position, either where you are or where you move to -- that's a game changer in my thinking.

Modern day masterpiece

This book is the most comprehensive book I have seen and read that covers the full spectrum of disease, illness, pathologies and many sicknesses that not only plague women, but men as well. The amount of detail and factual information in this book would normally be too much for the reader, but in this massive work Dr. Valentine manages to always keep your attention with vivid pictures and an uncanny ability of capturing the sign of our times. Normally when we look at disease, we very rarely look at cause or behavior to diagnose our condition. In the wounded womb virtually every major woman's disease and illness is covered from its cause to its origin and affect on society at large. I didn't know if it was possible for Dr. Valentine to write a book that would be as powerful as his lectures and seminars, but in this addition of his massive series The Re-Genesis Chronicles, the information written is just as powerful and just as mind blowing. Bravo!

Rare useful resource for teams and building team cultures

As a certified business coach, the majority of my business involves "team building" in some fashion, and about half deals directly with improving team or organizational effectiveness. I am constantly on the lookout for new resources and have developed quite a library of slightly useful references. While there are many books and other resources on "team building" and related issues on the market, including some wildly popular best-sellers, few are truly practical and fewer still offer replicable actions that work. "The Team Handbook Third Edition" is a rare exception.

Not only do the authors capture extensive best practices, including straightfoward "how to's" in terms that work for the average manager or team member, they have catalogued what I believe to be the best (most comprehensive, useful and easy-to-use) team tool on the market. I still prefer to help my clients organically build their own strategies for improvement, and recommend organizations and their leaders use outside facilitators for reasons I won't go into here. However, I use "The Team Handbook" as my own reference and reminder of best practices, processes and tools. And, so far, I have given it as a gift for a client's Customer Loyalty process improvement team to use. I plan to present it to more clients in the future.

This book is a wonderful read full of great motivational inspiration to help you realize "dreams" do take hard work , but to not get discouraged with little setbacks. Instead use them to make your success even greater by proving to yourself how much your drive is to be the "best" you can be in life.

Oh how I could've used then what you've told me now....

My first semester at the university was bewildering, indeed - I was but one, amongst thousands, and lost. I took 6 courses. I made 6 Fs. Second semester I again took 6 courses. A kindly instructor dropped me from one course, so I only made 5 Fs this time. I left the university with my head hung low.

I joined the Marines, got married, became a cop, lived life, finally returned to the university and to my dismay discovered I had been kicked out. I had to petition to get back in. I was re-admitted on probation.

Ten years later, a 3 page transcript (because I withdrew from so many courses), a bi-modal distribution of As and Fs, I finally earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. Ten years, of being the best (Dean's List), and the worst (Probation, Ds, Fs, Withdrawals and Incompletes). College never was an easy walk for me.

Oh, as a Frosh, I was forced to take a "How To Study" course. I learned mechanical techniques such as, SQ3R, etc. But something was missing. I was still feeling terribly alone, and I still faced daily feelings of hopelessness.

Oh how I could've used then what you've told me now, about your own journey Dr. Hoston. It would've helped, greatly. I had no idea any of my professors might ever have faced what I was facing.

Dr. Hoston's book is the melody of a man generously opening his soul, his most private thoughts and experiences, to others, so they might walk along with him, no longer alone in their struggle to grow, to learn, to achieve. "If I can do it, so can you," he tells the reader. And he shares with you just how he managed, how he dealt with the many obstacles along his rocky path.

Professor Hoston is no effete academe. He came from a challenging, highly dysfunctional background. The deck was stacked against him from the very beginning. I am reminded of Richard Wright's character Bigger Thomas. But unlike Bigger, Dr. Hoston prevailed. From a broken family, brothers in prison, this is a man who had luck, who was graced with some people to love him, but most of all, had courage, guts enough, if you will, to find pride in himself, to not turn against a hate-filled, often racist, society, but to attain the highest academic degree in the world, Ph.D., Doctor of Philosophy, and become a college professor.

Many years have passed since I managed to graduate from college with a BA. I have since achieved a Masters degree in Psychology. Had I had access to LISTEN TO ME NOW, OR LISTEN TO ME LATER: A MEMOIR OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS I am sure I'd have continued on for a Ph.D.

I highly recommend this book, this experience....

This book is a great motivational book and guide in helping students overcome fears, frustrations and obstacles that may occur in achieving the goal of completing college. This book is an inspirational book that highlights individuals who used their past experience as a driving force in their academic success.
