Not what the author intended?

A lot has been written about the Windsors' romance and lead-up to the abdication, but I was interested in learning how they spent their lives post-abdication. This book gave a fairly thorough description of those years, at least up to the duke's death. The author admits in the preface to the book that this is a one-sided account meant to "rehabilitate" the duchess's reputation; however, if that was his intent, I'd have to say he failed miserably. The book was interesting and well-written; it held my attention throughout. But the duke and duchess both came off as vapid, petty, status-obsessed vagabonds who were completely oblivious to the turmoil the abdication caused or the monumental concerns the king and government faced in the run-up to and engagement in World War II. They seemed to think the most important issues King George VI had to deal with after he was catapulted unexpectedly onto the throne was how much money the government would give the duke and whether the duchess would ever be given the HRH title. (At one point, the duchess writes that she wants the HRH designation because there are so many people running around Europe with completely meaningless titles and she doesn't want to be one of them.). One wonders how much worse they would have come off if the author had written an unbiased book and included all the reasons the royal family AND the government might have had for shunning them. This was a very good, interesting book; I'm just not sure it was the book the author thought he was writing.

Very interesting tale of the developments of the Duke and Duchess. It is decidedly pro-Duke. If you read the book The Last of the Duchess by Caroline Blackwood, you get another view of this author Michael Bloch. He was very pro-Duke and a somewhat strange admirer of the Windsors. However, this book fills in more of the space relating to the abdication and the events following.

Age gone by

This book is interesting in a lot of parts and ho-hum in others. I rather thought it would give more detail about the rift between Edward VIII and George VI. It does enlighten the reader about how he was treated after he left England to marry Mrs. Simpson. There is information in it that I was not aware of and does give the reader exposure to how the king leaving affected those at court and his finances and ownership of properties..

A critical look at how computers impact human interaction...

I imagine I would never have come across "Turing's Man" if it hadn't been required reading for a course I took at NYU entitled "The Digital Revolution." The course examined the sociological impact of the computerized world and the ever-expanding internet on human life and interaction, which means that Bolter's text was just what we needed: an overview of where technological progress has come from, where it is going, and what it is doing to us in the process.
Although Turing's Man is a little bit dated -- it was published in 1984, before the internet had even taken on a significant presence in modern life, it suggests and foreshadows a numer of themes which have become more prominent since the text was printed.
Beginning with an overview and survey of technological evolution, from the Ancient World right up through the present, Bolter does a fine job of articulating the complex process through which technology changes and is changed by the society into which it is introduced.
Once this idea has been established, Bolter pauses to provide a basic overview of how computers work... and while it changes over time, his description is general enough as to still be accurate -- AND non-technical enough to be understood without much computer knowledge.
He then goes on to examine certain ideas as they apply to both humans and computers, comparing the disparate nature of such fundamental concepts as time, space, language, and logic.
(Maybe this sounds confusing when I write it, but rest assured that Bolter is more articulate than I am feeling just now. He explains it all, and explains it well.)
In closing, Bolter considers the changes that computers have already initiated in our lifestyles and our thinking processes, and ventures some predictions as to future changes and developments.
Remember, though, that this book WAS written in 1984, and that the developments which we have seen since then are more extensive than those that Bolter laid out... if you are more interested in the specific impact of newer technologies, such as the internet and telecommunications, you'd be better served with a subscription to WIRED magazine, or a text such as Marshall McLuhan's "Understanding Media." This text provides a more general look at computers, their origin, and the fundamental ideas that they have instilled in our lives.
Fascinating ideas, especially if you are interested in the role that computers and new media have in shaping and directing our modern lives... "Turing's Man" isn't casual reading, perhaps, but it IS engaging and provocative.

Not what I wanted to read about.

I have always really liked Karin Slaughter's books. I especially like the Will Trent series.I would not enjoy a series centered on Angie. More than half of this book is devoted to Angie, a thoroughly unsympathetic central character for a book,. We got to read about who she talked to, who she met. what just crazy, selfish thoughts she has, how her car was running. I kept fast forwarding hoping we'd get back to the characters I thought the book would be about, Will and Sara, Amanda and Faith, and their lives. I also think Slaughter has pretty much wrung all she can out of Will's sad past and I would enjoy more story lines about his present day and his life with Sara. These are great characters and maybe there could be a more interest centered on their present day lives and challenges given that they have such interesting lives and occupations. Everybody moves on sooner or later, especially if they are happy. I was very disappointed that the ending seems to portend yet more of the same. I would be careful when the next Trent book is released to make sure it's mostly about the characters I want to read about. before I buy.

A story that was a long time coming....

I have been reading the Grant County/Will Trent series since the start. And Karin Slaughter is one of my top 3 mystery/thriller series. So it pains me to score this book lower than a 5. LIked it YES, really liked it NO. No because I didn't get what I personally wanted from the book, not that it's a bad book or that the story isn't an amazing suspense/thriller. It's just, for me, I was a bit disappointed.

This story was a long time coming. We have all been wanting some kind of resolution with the Sara/Will/Angie storyline. Honestly, we have all wanted Angie to go away and never come back. And it looked like we might have gotten that, for a split second. But this book is really about Angie's backstory. Who she is, why she does what she does. She is a horrible person, and she can't let Will go so he can be happy with Sara. She continually pokes at their lives, reminding them that she is like a cockroach that will never go away.

The story that Angie's story is threaded thru is nothing special. Basketball greats acting like spoiled, men who think they can get away with using and abusing women. Blah, blah, blah. It is just a platform to pull all the players together.

I won't spoil the real identity of the players, you get to put that puzzle together yourself. And it is a true Karin Slaughter puzzle. I almost had to get a whiteboard out to follow the bloodline and trail of identities and relationships. That, I will give 5 stars, because that is what Slaughter is great at. Building the suspense of the ultimate puzzle. And it's a brilliant puzzle, surprises around every corner.

My problem is I usually get resolution, and I didn't get that. Not the resolution that I wanted anyway. And maybe it will come in the next book (i hope so). I believe that Will and Sara deserve to have something after all the pain and loss they have had in their lives.

Not a stand alone book, great addition to the series.

If you have followed the Will Trent series from the beginning, especially if you have followed the series since Sarah and her first husband you will enjoy this newest addition. If you are new to the series you will struggle with not only the storyline, but Will Trent in particular - you may not even like Will in this book...this would be so unfair as he is a great character.
This book focuses a lot on the back story of Will and Angie (Will's wife), issues that have come up between Angie and Sarah (Will's girlfriend), and Angie's past with the department. The past is all tied together with the current case that the department is currently working on, with Angie right smack in the middle of. It is really hard to explain without giving spoilers.
Slaughter does what she normally does and gives great character development and a fantastic story that builds on her previous books. I honestly don't feel this is a stand alone book because there is so much rich history about characters that we have come to love (or hate) and to not have that going into this book, well I could see were you would just dislike all the characters.
I do wish for a more permanent ending with Angie. I am really sick of her having her claws in Will. I believe Slaughter wants to try to get us to like her in some small way like she did Lena in previous books, but I was never a fan of Lena's either.

One for the digital natives and immigrants

As a speculative fiction thriller, this is a first novel that is well worth a read. What particularly impressed me is that it relies on a central premise which to my reading is genuinely authentic and will most definitely resonate with today's readers, digital natives and immigrants alike.

It takes a couple of chapters for clarity in concept. But by then it is cemented in and it's a rollicking good ride. For those who enjoy Dan Brown and Matthew Reilly, you'll be pleased. And maybe a bit spooked. The characters are likeable and while there is some predictability in the plot path, there are still some clever and original surprises.

I'm really really hopeful that the author will be picked up a by a solid publishing house with a good editor for number two. Some aspects of the writing were rushed and seemed a little self conscious. I would love the author to slow it down and treat the reader to his generosity of thought, and ideas in more detail. More please...

Erasure - Totally intriguing

Hearing that A.T.H Webber had written his first book, I couldn't wait for my paperback to arrive. It was hard to tell exactly what this was about until you began reading. Once I did, I was hooked! There are so many twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat at times. Everything is so real and believable that I now wonder just how much is known about us and by how many. This is so very different to anything I would normally choose to read which is why I loved it so much. Taking you a journey or intrigue across Europe with 'big brother' watching made excellent reading. Talking about this book I found I kept saying, 'you just have to read it'!

An interesting hypothesis of life after death; a murder mystery with equal parts of love and evil, and the way we are all connected to data bases as soon as we use the internet, our mobile phones or GPS. Frightening and thought provoking, but riveting reading.

I've really liked all of her books

I've really liked all of her books, but not this one. It's super silly, had no real action or suspense, and the couple went from "no we can't" to constant sex. There were zombies. Why? (Admittedly I could have been daydreaming when that problem was rectified.) She's a vampire, he's human, although he is a psychic. Do they live as long as vampires? Hope so, otherwise their relationship is going to be short term.
There were ghost, too. They really didn't do much of anything; not spooky or scary or started any trouble. Very disappointing.

Same book, different names

I have loved the Broken Heart books, but this one wanted to make me scream. It is Housewife For Rent redone. All she did was move it from one small Oklahoma town to Broken Heart and changed some of the characters from wacky small town characters into wacky paranormal small-town characters. A lot of it is just totally verbatim the same. I realize since she wrote both books it's not really plagiarism but damn it's lazy!

A Fantastic Time!

This book was fabulous. This entire series is such a great time and this book is such a great addition. I love how the author incorporates new characters and situations while still keeping old and loved characters in the mix. There are so many parts that did have me laughing out loud. For anyone that is looking for a book to get lost in and forget about life for a while this is definitely a great choice!

Newitt's Portuguese in West Africa is clearly the best of the recent collections of documents in English about the Portuguese presence in the early modern world. About the Author
Malyn Newitt is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at King's College London. He is the author or editor of twelve books on Portuguese colonial history, including A History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion, as well as multiple journal articles.

Great book!

I chose this rating because I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked that it is a compilation of original documents written by people active in the region in one way or another and I recommend it to people who are interested in history in general, the history of Portugal and/or Africa, or people interested religious history, specifically Catholicism, but there are also some interesting notes about Judaism.

The Portuguese in West Africa

The book was quite new and in very good conditions. It was delivered on time. The only thing that happened is that it arrived from New Zealand instead from U.S. and I had to pay an additional sum of 6.5 Euros.
