At the same time the sovereign debt crisis has created a periphery of predominantly Southern European countries within the Eurozone that became dependent on external financial support from the other member states. The contributions in this book critically examine various aspects of the emerging internal post-crisis constellation of the EU. The main focus lies on national and supranational governance issues, national dynamics and dynamics in the Eurozone core as well as in the periphery.

Christian Schweiger is Senior Lecturer in the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK. His main research interests are the political economy of the EU, national varieties of economic and social development in the member states and transatlantic relations.

Superior translation in all ways!

There are not too many good translations of Sophocles's other 4 miscellaneous plays. The 2 other main versions are by Lattimore, and by Watling.

I find the Lattimore too stiff and archaic, and the Watling stuffy and congested :(

This one translated by great stage director Peter Meineck (on the excellent Hackett label) re-defines the art of translation in this edition! He blows the many other translations out of the water by his lucid, powerful, believable and beautiful version. I love his lines, the words he chooses, and the way he puts them all together.

I actually can see it happening before me, whereas in other versions, it's more like history and a "good read".

Perfect for the acting student, stage director and lover of ancient wisdom!

You have to be willing to read and re-read these four plays to get a full understanding as to what going on in them. You also have to get the ORESTIA to get the back story of ELECTRA. Greek drama is not always an 'easy' read, but its definitelt a good read!!

ajax the beast

I was mistaken in ordering the English version without the original Greek text. However, reading the text in translation now, I could recommend it as reflective, sensible translation with a certain weight. But it is not my idea of "Ajax". Ajax is a mad, tragic cry for help. The main character is going through a war trauma. The beauty of some lines should be so painful, and not resembling a discussion or argument in court.
Great series of texts though.

ViÅnja PaviÄiÄ‡ TakaÄ obtained her BA in English and German language and literature from the University of Osijek, Croatia, and her MA and PhD from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. After working as a primary school teacher of English, she was appointed teaching assistant for the English language and ELT methodology at the Faculty of Philosophy University of Osijek, Croatia. As a guest lecturer, she has also taught at universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the postgraduate course on foreign language learning strategies at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. Her professional and research interests include individual differences in foreign language learning, language learning strategies, interlanguage, cross-linguistic studies, as well as pre-service teacher education and foreign language teachersâ€™ competence. She is currently an assistant professor and teaches a variety of under- and postgraduate courses related to theory and practice of foreign language acquisition.

How is nihilism our new condition?

Vattimo continues to issue his argument for a soft-ontology after metaphysics has suffered from the end of absolutes. The end is nothing...nihilism. I am convinced that Vattimo and others like him are correct in accessing our age as technocratic nihilism but I am not convinced that Vattimo's soft-ontology is much more than a "practical" excuse to live as though there is meaning even though tying life to shared experience is impossible. The only real impossibility is that life is impossible. Is a new motivation for innovation and culture possible if we admit with Vattimo that nihilism "gesture[s] toward a new human experience" (26)? I am not convinced that he demonstrates this. Instead I see Vattimo arguing for a kind of soft-ontology that attempts to balance the reification of objective language with the broader givens of life experience that are coordinated in forms of life. Although I am not convinced of Vattimo's vision for life and society after nihilism I do think this book is worthy of a serious read.

This book is important to understand postmodernism. However, i don't image american readers accepting Vattimo's tesis about weak subjet right to have a place in world. Why modern civilization has impossed to us the obligation of being strong and the first in every action as the only way to be allowed as a member of this society?

I am missing like half of the figures and graphs in each chapter. There is some sort of glitch with the digital copy for kindle. So when they talk about a subject and refer to a figure I have no idea what they are talking about.
