The themes include: the delivery of building land with site preparation, infrastructure and property rights; the size and amount of plots able to match both demographic projections and wealth distribution; the creation of a property market able to deliver affordable land and buildings to match demand, encourage investment and further the development of the economy; the spatial or geographic adjustment of institutional patterns to reflect the components of identity - making for 'fuzzy' sovereignty; and a form of organisation which leads to effective project management and implementation, and so on. The view is taken that lack of suitable development land supply, a land market unable to deliver affordable property to the people and unable to support economic growth, and a spatial-institutional pattern unable to match key aspects of identity, are all causes of war as well as societal or political decline. The book contains many drawings prepared by the author, including plans of urban projects described in the text. It may be of interest particularly to architects, town planners, municipal engineers and civil engineers, urban administrators, urban economists, politicians, diplomats, soldiers, and staff of NGOs and international agencies.

About the Author
John Yarwood graduated in architecture from the University of Edinburgh and in urban planning from the University of Sheffield. His doctoral thesis concerned the history of Islamic urbanism. After an early career in local government, he was for five years head of the architects' department of Telford New Town Development Corporation. After two years as Head of Urban Renewal in Bahrain, he worked as a consultant in Turkey, the Philippines, Kuwait, Jamaica, Dubai, Germany, Finland, Britain, Russia, Poland, China, Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sudan, Afghanistan and Albania. He worked for the E.U, E.C, World Bank, etc. Subsequently he worked as an academic at University College Dublin. He was awarded an MBE in 1997 after his work in Bosnia. He is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He used to be a Quaker. He is married to an ex- children's psychiatric social worker, who is now a counsellor to refugees and torture victims. They have three grown-up children.

You cannot imagine how valuable this book can be; nearly 100 graphs and tables packed into 124 fun to read pages!

Don Wheeler, former colleague of W. Edwards Deming, explains how VERY SIMPLE statistics can transform any business process.

As a young boy in Tennessee, I sometimes uncovered "white lightning" (moonshine whiskey) hidden in forests. MIght his East Tennessee roots give Wheeler his rare sense of humor and fascination with how data and KPI's can be used to "cheat?"

This book is very rich in actual examples of data being used to mislead as well as KPI's which actually promote THE OPPOSITE behavior intended.

Wheeler takes the reader through multiple "cycles of learning" in this short read which is easily completed in under 2 hours on a flight. But be warned; once you read this book you will want to reread it and apply the lessons many times.

I wish economists and journalists and other leaders would read books like Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. Today the news is that unemployment claims went up, for the first time in 3 weeks. Analysts are now speculating that maybe the recovery is not as strong as it appears.

Excuse me. What are you saying? Are you saying that one upward blip can be extrapolated into a trend? Are you saying that because we flipped a coin 3 times and got heads (unemployment going down), and now we got a tail (unemployment going up) that our coin is defective? Are you saying that because temperatures were warmer than usual last week that we won't have winter?

One data point does not make a trend. We can't say the recovery is soft unless we know what the normal variation is on the out-of-work claims from week to week. Any result from week to week is going to be up or down (like heads or tails). Just because it goes up doesn't mean that a trend has reversed, when we didn't have a significant trend in the first place. 3 weeks of claims going down, analogous to coin flipping, could happen 1 in 8 times. The chance of it going down a fourth time is 1 in 16, unless there's a change in the system that creates unemployment claims (or better, creates jobs). Until we get to the odds of 1 in 64 (6 weeks in a row in the same direction--or some say, 1 in 256 is less risky for identifying a false trend) we can't say that we had an unemployment trend at all.

Please, Mr/Ms Economist and Mr/Ms Journalist, don't get confused and become Chicken Little thinking the economic sky is falling based on one piece of data that was going to show up normally. Read Wheeler's book to better understand all this.

I know kung fu

After reading this book (only took a couple of evenings) I feel like Keanu Reaves in The Matrix.

I've been studying Dr. Deming's system of profound knowledge, and the bit about understanding variation has been on my TODO list. This book nailed it with a crystal clear introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC), which Dr. Deming promoted based on his learnings from statistician Walter Shewhart when they worked together at Bell Labs. As Dr. Deming pointed out, an eighth-grader could do this; it's not supposed to be hard, so take the negative reviews of this book with a grain of salt. If you already understand and use SPC, you won't gain nearly as much from this book as a newbie like myself.

I remember reading Deming's Out of the Crisis and thinking that the terminology around SPC could easily be confused. "Control" is a very loaded term. Dr. Wheeler has come up with a new terminology, replacing "Control" with "Predictability", among other things. This is going to make it much easier for me to talk about without creating misconceptions.

Thanks Dr. Wheeler for making this topic so approachable and for framing it in such a compelling way, and for not being afraid to promote an entirely new terminology even when your book publishing company is known as "SPC Publishing". This reinforces your own personal belief in continual improvement.

I have had many copies of this cookbook. The first one I bought was from Knotts's Berry Farm when I worked there 20 years ago. Quite frankly, I have made every recipe in that book many times and they are all wonderful. I would recommend this cookbook to any you love great old fashioned food.

The college text book provides the basics of HVAC, with applicable examples, for typical residential and small commercial buildings. The book is a bit light on heat pumps and programmable control systems.

Worth every penny and then some!

I recently purchased Pat's book for my college freshman son. I was planning on sticking it in his stocking for Christmas, but gave it to him early after we got in a long conversation about his future. He told me he didn't want to read it right away (he needed a break from "work" after finals), but I brought it along to an appointment we were waiting for and asked him to at least read the "So Who is This Guy?" section. Once he read about Pat, realized it was an easy and entertaining read, he was hooked! He stayed up and finished the book that night. It immediately made a difference in the way he is thinking about his college experience and his future. Even though he's a very good student, he knows now that a job isn't going to magically fall into his lap after college unless he takes some steps to make himself more marketable. He told me the book was filled with a lot of common sense things he already knew, but Pat put them all together in a way that made so much sense and caused him to want to take action. I'm relieved because I no longer feel the need to "nag" him about doing well and getting into activities and holding leadership positions. He's taking the lead because he took Pat's advice to heart. I'm telling all my friends about this book and it's going to be my "Go To" high school graduation gift from here on out! EVERY graduate will benefit from it!!!

This book helped me set my goals

I started reading this book my second semester of my freshman year in college. I had gotten a good start into college, but hadn't thought much about my future or what my goals were. This book really hit me hard when I started reading it. I didn't fully understand how important even your freshman year in college was. Now that I have read the book, I have started setting goals for myself and I will strive to be the best student that I can be throughout the remainder of my college career. Pat gives great advice on how to find a college, how to get started, what you should do in college to get to the top, and how to set yourself up for success in your future career. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is preparing for college and college students themselves. It is very helpful, easy to read, and gets right to the point. It helps having someone to tell you what to expect, especially when it comes to college which is arguably one of the most critical times in your life.

A "must" read for any senior graduating from HS

I recently read Pat's book and I am so impressed with all of his "down to earth" advice for any person entering college. He gives college kids realistic things they can do to be successful in college and in life. I am a teacher and think that any child graduating from HS should read this book. I recently purchased it for my son who is a freshmen in college right now and hope that it will help him manage his time better. Maybe if I would have bought it before he actually went to college, he would be doing better right now. I will share Pat's book with anyone I know that is going to college for the first time from now on!!!! Much better gift than money that will just be wasted on college expenses if they don't know what to do when they get there!!!!

What's not to love about this book? It's true love (high school sweethearts) given a second chance after 17 years. Plus a duck named Rufus! Love and forgiveness - with trust issues thrown it - best describes this book. Don't be fooled into thinking its going to be predictable. Sure, there were a few things I saw coming, but there were just as many that went a completely different direction. I also felt the connection between Quentin and Amy. Quick - because you want to keep reading to see how it all ends - easy, feel good book! I hope the author writes more books just like this one.

Amy Walsh has returned to her home town of Goose Bay, Washington, for the first time in seventeen years, covering maternity leave for the English and journalism teacher. One of her brightest students is Shayna Macmillan, who she finds is the daughter of Quentin Macmillian, the high school sweetheart who abandoned her with no explanation and married his beautiful best friend instead. Shayna has been paired with Bradley Baxter for a journalism assignment, and her father is angry when he finds out--angry enough to visit the teacher and demand she change the assignments. He's shocked when he realises the teacher is Amy Welsh, his one-time love.

The Amazon blurb says: "When Amy Welsh returns to Goose Bay as a substitute teacher, she has no intention of seeing Quentin Macmillan, the man who once left her waiting in the rain clutching her suitcase and dreaming of becoming his wife. Seventeen years later, his teenage daughter shows up in Amy's class with plans to reunite her widowed father with the woman he has always loved."

Don't you love it when the blurb gives away half the plot? I actually hadn't read the blurb before reading the book, so I thought best part about the novel was trying to work out the motivation for Shayna's actions, because they didn't seem in character. When the big reveal came at the end, it was a surprise to me, and it explained Shayna's actions nicely. But it won't be a surprise to anyone who's read the blurb.

Amy is thirty-four going on eighteen, and I'm wasn't convinced she had the emotional distance to see Quentin as the man he is today rather than the boy he was seventeen years ago. One minute she's determined never to trust a man or let Quentin anywhere near her heart, the next she's flirting, going on a date with him or kissing him (and not just a peck on the cheek). Even when she was convinced she was seeing the man, not the boy, I felt she was being led by her teenage emotional self, not her adult self.

But Amy wants to know why Quentin never turned up that last night, and it seems that every time they are about to have `the conversation', they put it off (and those plans kept going awry). Why not just say it?

I was expecting a different reason, so No Substitute scores a plus for the element of surprise, but when the Big Reveal came, I wasn't convinced. It didn't seem logical. I didn't find it realistic that a man who is supposed to be intelligent couldn't come up with another solution. I understand that it was supposed to cement him in our minds as being noble and loyal, but it came across to me as controlling, because that is how I had seen him acting throughout the novel, particularly in relation to his daughter. He certainly wasn't an example of Christian forgiveness in action.

On the plus side, the writing was good and the minor characters, Shayna and Brandon, were excellent--real teenagers who I could believe. Amy, Quentin and Shayna are all Christians, and I thought the spiritual aspects and the underlying theme of forgiveness were handled well, without being preachy. A solid debut novel with several layers and a nice mix of funny and serious.

I really enjoyed reading 'No Substitute', a fun and light hearted reunion romance between childhood sweethearts Amy and Quentin. Amy returns to Goose Bay, hoping to get past her teenage infatuation with Quentin once and for all. She never knew the real reason why their teen romance ended and Quentin married someone else so soon after she left town. Quentin's teenage daughter is in Amy's class, and she sets in motion a plan to push her father and Amy together.

Amy and Quentin are fascinating characters who deal with situations that challenge their faith. Amy grows in her faith as she rediscovers Goose Bay and her love for Quentin. He is a lovable hero who is doing his best to raise his teen daughter on his own. We see Quentin's faith in action and his willingness to forgive in difficult and challenging situations. A very cute duck named Rufus also features in the story, set in Washington State. I highly recommend this book to those looking for an entertaining and inspiring Christian romance with a forgiveness theme.
