No English in this book at all (just so you know); if you are planning to teach yourself, this may not be the best book for that

Very good book- since it's "immersion" that means there is absolutely NO English in here, whatsoever.... Which can make it tricky (if you're not in a class- perhaps impossible); but HEY when I look words up elsewhere, I remember them better, so maybe that's intentional. The example conversations on the CD are SO fast it is IMPOSSIBLE for a beginner to follow-- I think they did this so that we can get used to 'normal' conversation speed and different accents... however, as a person very new to Spanish, even in my third class and finishing up this book, it is still much too fast for me to understand. I can only understand 1 out of 20 words. I appreciate the desire to have us listen to current and contemporary conversation, but does EVERY conversation have to be 100 mph? Perhaps don't give your conversationalists espresso right before recording them! :) The only way I can find out what they're saying (they are also using words/phrases that aren't in our book, too, which our teacher then explains to us) is by reading the transcript from the teacher's book. Perhaps in the next version you can have every other conversation be fast if that's important to you, but please let some be relaxed- not boring, but not on speed, either. In normal English conversations people sometimes speak slowly and thoughtfully, and in a relaxed manner-- if this ever happens in Hispanic countries, please record conversations at this speed to represent those conversations as well as the fast ones.

About the Author
Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 - 22 December 1880; alternatively "Mary Anne" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. She also wished to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic. Must Read Melancholy Romance

Wow...

This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.

I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.

Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.

Highly recommended.

A Gothic parable about love

This short book, which amazon gives free to kindle owners, was composed by George Elliot (1819-1880). A shy rich man with a weak, sickly, poetical nature expects to die very soon from a heart condition in 1850. He doesn't expect any of his three servants to respond to his bell for help because he understand people and knows that they are involved in their own affairs. He uses these moments alone to tell his life story.

He realized that he had unique abilities when he was young. He had visions of the future, what people will do and say, long before they do or say it. He also had the gift of insight. He could understand people's character and pierce the veil of their faces and false conduct. Yet, he couldn't understand Bertha for many years.

Bertha was a thin and beautiful girl, a year older than he, with whom he fell in love. She could be charming. Yet, she was self-centered, negative, heartless, satirical, sarcastic, opinionated, vain, and loved power, but he saw none of this. He was nineteen and she twenty. She was engaged to his brother who was twenty-six. She admitted to him that she didn't love his brother. But he was in ecstasy with her and saw no faults. He even ignored a vision that he was married to her and she mistreated him. His brother died in an accident and he married Bertha without knowing if she loved him, although she said she did.

After some years of marriage, when his father died, he was suddenly able to see what his wife Bertha truly was, that she despised him. Then life became unbearable, as he foresaw in his vision.

He noticed a strange relationship between Bertha and her servant. Then, when the servant was dying, his friend, a doctor, told him that the servant would expire that night and asked for permission from him to insert blood into her artery after she died to see what happens. She died, the blood was inserted, she came back to life, turned to Bertha, who just entered the room, and yelled at her, "You mean to poison your husband...the poison is in the black cabinet...I got it for you." Then she died again, and he separated from Bertha after dividing his property with her, equally.

Reflecting back at the servant's resurrection, he asks, "Is this what it is to live again...to wake up with our unsatiated thirst upon us, with our unuttered curses rising to our lips, with our muscles ready to act out their half committed sins?"

Can this story be read as a parable, a commentary on marriage, that men are unable to unveil the character of their wives' feelings, even though they can understand other people, that love blinds?

This is a short story and is very different from anything else I've read of George Eliot's. It's a little bit of a horror story with no characters to truly like. The feeling of it reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

I was first referenced to this book in a Paul Janka interview on a pickup podcast and more recently in an article on ROK where he spoke very highly of it. I had been a student of Paul Janka's teachings so I decided to check it out and boy did it shatter a lot of concepts i had not only of women and relationships but perhaps more importantly myself as a man and why I acted the way I did. It was like putting on a new set of glasses and unplugging from everything I thought was true. This book really breaks down the game on all levels in a clear and understandable way about women's behavior and relationship dynamics from a biological standpoint down to why women manipulate men into servitude positions and how to properly use certain concepts and basic logic in order to properly screen different types of women HSE/LSE and ultimately decide which road you want to take with every interaction and type of women you come across.
This book isn't just theory but backed by scientific examples and practical advice on how to use the concepts and techniques mentioned to improve your life in every way possible. It also does a good job explaining why society and relationships in general have greatly diminished and deteriorated in this current feminized society. The information here is top shelf and in a league of it's own. It should be added to every serious student's library of red pill wisdom as it will improve your life and understanding on many levels. I only wish the authors were a bit more involved in the public sphere and had a website in order to interact more with their base..

Amazingly accurate.. albeit not for the faint of heart

Great book. A bitter pill to swallow but based on my fairly vast experience with women it is spot on. I was tempted to give it a 4 instead of a 5 because I wish they would have provided more real world examples. I think the noobie might have a hard time understanding these concepts in a practical sense. But my experience allows me to fairly easily take the information and apply it to the real world. In fact my last girlfriend was a Low Self Esteem/Good Girl with a high sex drive.

Literally everything they said about this type applied to this girl's behavior. In fact I had to laugh when I thought back about her in light of the information in this book. I ending it with her because she was too screwed up and incapable of having a healthy relationship.

Men ruin their whole lives by choosing the wrong women. It's mind blowing. My friend unknowingly married a materialistic low self esteem type. He's been in divorce court for 6 years. She will not stop until she sucks him dry. It's amazing to watch.

It's also amazing to watch how defensive and angry feminists and women in general can get when presented with this material. On a deeper level they are absolutely panicked that men might figure this all out. It's too late ladies - we already have. Welcome to the future.

I recall with amusement how one past girlfriend of mine said: "men need to stay dumb and in their caves, I don't like how they are learning about women." And she was a High Self Esteem Good Girl!

I decided to give the book a 5 because publications like this will always get bad ratings from feminists and confused angry noobies. So in order to keep some balance I thought it best to give it a 5.

JWS and Franco are two of the most brilliant minds in the niche

JWS and Franco are two of the most brilliant minds in the niche, both of whom I've had the pleasure of being mentored by over the years. JWS is also one of a tiny number of men who truly understands the monogamy myth and especially the ways in which it applies to female drives and how they interact with men. This book contains the collected wisdom of a man who has been everywhere and seen everything, and knows very well the consequences of getting involved with dysfunctional women. It is my hope that men will purchase this book BEFORE they have to, in order to arm themselves properly rather than having to go through the experiences which birthed such clarity in the first place. Can't recommend it enough!

About the Author

John Harrison has had a lifelong interest in wildlife, and birds in particular. In 1973, he was appointed as a radio producer in the BBC Natural History Unit; during the 18 years he was there, he worked with most of the top naturalists and ornithologists in Britain. As a birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast, he has made many visits to Sri Lanka over a number of years, and has a first-hand knowledge of the Sri Lankan avifauna. He is now the voluntary warden of a 70 ha wetland nature reserve for the Avon Wildlife Trust.

Tim Worfolk is a full-time wildlife artist with several publications to his credit.

Quality, complete guide for all Sri Lanka's birds

THE BASICS:
softcover; 48 color plates with good artistry show all 426 species known from the island; more complete than other similar books; species account for each bird focuses primarily on identification; a small range map is shown with each bird

THE REVIEW:
Of the few field guides that cover only Sri Lanka, this is easily the best book for several reasons. One, it is the only Sri Lanka guide to illustrate all birds of the island versus showing only the resident birds. Two, quality artistry show many more plumages. And, three, the text contains more information for identification and also offers tips to help distinguish between the similar species.

Each plate contains between 4-15 different species with most plates having about 10. To illustrate these birds, each plate may have anywhere between 15 and 40 different illustrations. As an extreme, the plate for the harriers contains only 4 species yet over 40 different illustrations. Consequently, this creates a rather crowded or busy looking page and all the images are slightly small to examine. This same scenario is true for most of the plates showing the raptors, gulls, terns, and shorebirds. However, I'll take this slightly cramped looking plate with all the many plumages over a plate with a limited selection of illustrations.

Across from each plate are brief notes (1-4 lines) that address the identification of each bird. A very small range map of Sri Lanka is also supplied for each bird. Due to the small size of the island -- and of the map on the page -- the ranges are generalized. These maps can look much the same between all the birds and are only somewhat useful for making generalizations of the bird's distribution.

The final two-thirds of the book contains the species accounts. This is where each bird receives a few short paragraphs dedicated to identifying the bird and comparing it to similar species. This information offers nice detail and good notes that help to identify the bird. Other brief information is given for the voice, status/distribution, habitat, and range.

Any birding done in Sri Lanka should use this book as the primary reference. It is both a good book and, the best one dedicated to just Sri Lanka. A few other all-India books would also work, but the vast number of species included across the entire subcontinent would be overkill for the island. -- (written by Jack at Avian Review with sample pages, October 2008)

But The Binding!

I have just come back from three weeks in Sri Lanka. The information and explanations good and clear. The drawings are excellent. But the Binding, within four days in the humidity of Sri Lanka the pictures were coming away from the binding and after three weeks one third of the pictures are detached. If there is one, buy the hardback.

A really professional handbook

For the current traveller this is probably the best identification guide you can take with you. The distribution maps are a bit generalised but they give a general idea, and changes in distribution and status since the time of such writers like Henry have been updated.

The illustrations throughout are thorough and the book does its best to help you distinguish between similar looking birds. More on vocalisations would have been helpful.

An invaluable and well illustrated reference overall.
