Wisdom and common sense of the Founders

Dr. Carrese is a deep thinker with the gift of communication with others outside his field. An Oxford Ph.D and professor at the AFA, his conservative viewpoint of the founders and their expressions has discovered revealed for us a stratum of thinking that appears to be bedrock of the constitution, that political discourse leavened by moderation is our best course. Many other ideas are explored here, and Montesquieu appears to be a special interest of his, most welcome in an age dominated by self gratification and "my way or the highway" speeches. The timeless theme is well worth reading this true authority's treatise.

Ivor Horton's Beginning C++ provides a thorough and exceptionally well-written introduction to the world of C++. This guide pays the same attention to detail as Horton's previous book, Beginning Java, and it provides clear and illustrative examples, making it an excellent candidate for your programming bookshelf.

Even working C++ programmers may not be familiar with all the advanced features of the Standard C++. The approach throughout Beginning C++ is to cover what C++ does out of the box. (One good reason to consider C++ instead of Java, for example, is that C++ is very close to becoming an international standard, while Java continues to fragment amid proprietary disputes between vendors such as Sun Microsystems and Microsoft.) Even early chapters introduce Standard Library features along with basic C++ data types, keywords, operators, and flow control statements. The built-in C++ string class gets full coverage, all before the book introduces the concepts of pointers. (It's significant that the new C++ can do a lot more than manipulate data through pointers. The author makes a strong case that these built-in strengths are what will let C++ compete against Java.)

Later chapters explore topics in class design, which lets you design custom effective classes in C++. Thorny issues in class design, such as inheritance, virtual methods, and the proper use of default and copy constructors, as well as the pitfalls and advantages of operator overloading, are all presented in remarkably clear detail.

Classes in the C++ Standard Template Library are given their due. In all, Beginning C++ provides a massive amount of material, but presents it in digestible increments. The authors do a fine job of presenting the basics before going on to more advanced topics. This can be used as a stand-alone text to getting the most out of the C++ language.

Excellent, but needs a revision

Horton's explanation of C++ is the clearest and most throrough I've ever read. He really makes object-oriented programming seem almost intuitive where other authors only muddle it. He's excellent at anticipating exactly what questions the reader is going to have as he's reading, and giving the details that answer them. However, I would recommend doing a little bit of a good introductory C book first. While the book purports to be for complete beginners, it may be a little harsh at first if you've never programmed before.
Also, the last chapter, on the STL, is awful. For some reason, Horton decided to let somebody else write it, and no offense to that person, but the clear explanatory style you've grown to expect in the first 19 chapters suddenly disappears and the concepts become very difficult to grasp. The "How it works" sections in this last chapter leave you more confused than you were before you read them, and I don't even think the chapter gives you enough information to be able to do the exercises at the end. I wish Horton would rewrite it himself.
All in all, though, it's an excellent book.

I really like it

If this book had come out 4 years ago, I wouldn't have stopped programming in C++. I took programming in high school but the books we used were so boring and stale, I hated programming.
Now I pick up this book, wow, this book makes programming fun! The book is clear and has lots of examples and he fully explains every line in the examples too. He gives you a few projects to do at the end of each chapter which are interesting and fun to do.
Since I used to program in C++, I can honestly say if someone asked me what a good book would be to buy to start programming I would recommend this one. It starts from the beginning and works upward at a good pace.
My C++ knowledge had obviously rusted completely over after four years, however this book very quickly brought it back into focus. This book hands down is awesome.

This is REALLY where to start!

Anyone reading these reviews is obviously just getting started in C++, and if you're like I was 6 months ago, you're probably confused by all the "starter" books out there. Don't waste your time! Buy this book (and only this one until you get your feet wet) -- you will not be disappointed. The format/layout and efficiency of each chapter will keep you well focused and keep you from yanking your hair out. I needed a crash course in C++ and of course, it just couldn't be done (21 Days? Don't even think about it!) -- other books got me nowhere, but Ivor's book allowed me to spring into an Advanced C++ course with no prior training and keep my head above the water. Keep in mind the new ANSI/ISO standard, which Ivor covers in great detail. Do yourself a favor and minimize the headaches...start here!

It is a beautiful short love story

This novella was originally published in Spell of the Ball anthology, which I read because of this story about Stanhill and Corette. It is a beautiful short love story, no villains, just a love story. I loved it because we finally got to know those two great characters better. Kristen Painter is one of my favourite writers in the world and I have read every single book she wrote, so it was only logical I wanted to read this one as well. It can be read as a standalone but then you miss the development of Nocturne Falls and the other characters. The order is: The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls #1), The Werewolf Meets His Match (Nocturne Falls #2), The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3), The Professor Woos The Witch (Nocturne Falls, #4), this book The Witch’s Halloween Hero (Nocturne Falls #4.5), The Werewolf's Christmas Wish (Nocturne Falls #4.75) in Hex the Halls Anthology and the latest book The Vampire’s Fake Fiancée (Nocturne Falls #5).

A fun town that celebrates Halloween year round. This novella is so romantic as the two woo each other. I have read this series and it's one of my favorite paranormal series because of the lightness (humor), the romance, the quirky town and the mix of "others" from witches to vampires, gargoyles and werewolves.

It's fine for what it is

It's fine for what it is, but it's not what I wanted. Unfortunately there's no way to know if it's what I wanted because I wasn't able to see inside the book ahead of time. Amazon REALLY needs to let their customers see inside the book, at least one or two pages, in order to know whether the skill level is appropriate. There were two options for piano, big note music (which is super easy for early beginners), and this one, easy piano. I'm disappointed that there's not an option for intermediate to advanced players because both of these options won't work for me. I just wish I'd had known before I made the purchase. The book is great otherwise. It is, indeed, an easy piano book. I would bet my students who have been taking lessons for a couple of years could play it after some serious practice.

Did the best they could - easy piano for songs that don't sound great as a piano solo

A few songs sound great but many songs in tangled have a lot of speaking parts instead of singing - the "flower gleam and glow" song is great and easy. Also, "now that I've found you" is great. The others are questionable. I think the problem is that these songs just aren't meant to be piano solos.

Big change in versions

I apparently got edition I, with the waterfall on the cover. Appears to be very different from second edition, so I guess I'm on the hook to buy another one. My mistake, probably, but be aware: There's a big difference, don't get the wrong one. If the prof says second edition, be sure you get second edition.

Nice Trick

This book seems to have gone the tricky way to get you to buy the usually incompatible with your class SI version of the book. True it is cheaper than the "hard cover" but no where on the page, except if you squint and stare at the picture of the book does it mention this is the SI version of the book. The material will be the same but as every engineering student knows that the teachers frequently only use the book itself as reference and the real use of it is the questions at the end of the chapters for homework. This book will allow you to have the fun of finding a friend and changing up all the problems you need. I am sure the book with be the same but overall very annoying being tricked into buying the wrong book. Always nice thing to find out after you start to do your homework assuming you bought the right book because you intentionally stayed away from the SI versions.

Paperback vs. Hardcover

You can save at least $40 by going paperback instead of hardcover for this textbook, and the only thing missing from the paperback version is the constants written on the inside cover of the hardcover book. I just had my roommate photocopy the page for me and taped it in my paperback book. Exactly equal textbooks, not so equal price. Paperbacks are the way to go.

Great book for a light Machu Picchu discovery.

We bought this book while at Machu Picchu and then promptly left the bag in our supper restaurant. Sad sad. Though we could not read it while in Peru, I ordered it on Amazon and had it delivered to a friend who then brought it to us when we met in Cartagena. It's a great book.

I wanted to like this more than I did.

This was what seemed to be a very accurate book on the period. But the text felt to me very dense, hard to understand, and especially hard for kids (mine are 6 and 10 and as a mother will always say, smart.) I was hoping for something that more clearly laid out the timelines of the Incan Empire and the Spanish invasion and put the events in sequence that they could digest. I found myself reading the material to my six-year old, then going back through it in my own words after I had done that. This is the best book I could find on the topic for kids, but I still thought the text was unnecessarily dense. For example to describe some of the tribes before the Incas, phrases like "During quests to take over their land... they were conquered" or "they served their new Inca rulers." I first had to explain a quest, conquer, and what "serving a ruler" meant- I'm frankly not even sure. If you are going to say stones were fitted together without mortar, few kids actually know what mortar is. Either use more sentences and make them simpler and explain those concepts, or don't use those words. It seems like the language in unnecessarily dense or maybe just odd word choices that result in text that isn't easy to explain to the targeted demographic. Either way, requires a lot of adult involvement for this book to make sense to either age.

Rowan K. Flad is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He is actively engaged in archaeological field work in China and has lectured widely on Chinese archaeology. About the Author

Richard E. Neapolitan is a professor of computer science at Northeastern Illinois University. Dr. Neapolitan has published in prestigious journals related to reasoning under uncertainty and has authored five books: Probabilistic Reasoning in Expert Systems, Learning Bayesian Networks, Foundations of Algorithms, Probabilistic Methods for Financial and Marketing Informatics, and Probabilistic Methods for Bioinformatics. His research interests include probability and statistics, expert systems, cognitive science, and applications of probabilistic modeling to fields such as medicine, biology, and finance.

Xia Jiang is an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Jiang co-authored Probabilistic Methods for Financial and Marketing Informatics. Her current research focuses on developing novel algorithms/systems that improve the computational efficiency of large data analysis and network modeling of cancer genome data.

A future classic: should be one of the the first A.I. textbook you read, a pedagogical yet rigorous introduction to the field

I'm not sure why this book isn't more popular than it deserves to be. Everything is written in a concise, pedagogical style and easily the most approachable Introduction to A.I. book I have ever read. If you struggled with Russell/Norvig (Artificial Intelligence: A modern approach), which tend to be more theory based with little examples to solidify the explanation, this book takes the same approach but contain many examples to help you understand the theory. This book has a heavy emphasis on the probabilistic models used in A.I. (e.g.Bayesian learning), but it is by no means terse on other A.I techniques such as Logical A.I. and Machine learning . The set-up of the chapters and topics are similar to Russell/Norvig book (sans the searching methods that is only in Russell/Norvig), so it makes a great companion textbook for the corresponding chapters. However, this book has chapters on evolutionary computing and swarm intelligence that Russell/Norvig did not include as a topic, these chapters alone are worthy of the purchase of this book given that there are few books out there that give such a approachable and easily comprehensible introduction to these topics.

This book will be a future classic in the field and I look forward to future updates to this masterpiece of A.I. teaching
