About the Author
John H. Martin was a professor of Chinese and Japanese Civilization at the University of Richmond and taught courses in Japanese history, religion and culture at several colleges in New York State. Dr. Martin and his wife, Phyllis G. Martin, have been directors of museums in New York and have traveled extensively in Japan and elsewhere.

Great detail, excellent maps, not for the casual tourist

If you like detailed maps like I do (and not everyone does), the in-book and separate fold-out maps are excellent--on par with the Periplus map that has been my mainstay, and much better than Lonely Planet ones that tend to just get you from point A to point B rather than let you actually explore. If you think about it that way, you are getting a $10 map for "free" with this book. The amount of detail makes it unwieldy, both physically and mentally, for the casual tourist (or even the serious, short-term tourist). As a professor of Japanese and a faculty leader of an abroad program based in Kyoto, I own dozens of guides to the city and all of Japan, and I found the detail, especially since my own focus is classical Japan, very enjoyable. I may even assign it as a text for a course preparing students to go to Kyoto. That said, it seems like the kind of book that would only be useful for someone who will be living in Kyoto for a while (such as on an abroad program), and not for a visitor. Other travel guides offer great 3-day, 7-day, or even 14-day itineraries for Kyoto. This one might be best billed as a good basis for a 60-day itinerary.

A MUST if you are traveling to Kyoto!

I can't believe why other readers did not like this book. I used it for a 6-day trip to Kyoto and this was by far one of the best guide books I have ever used (and I have traveled a lot).
Unlike the regular Lonely Planet, Frommer's, and Fodor's, which just give tons of laundry lists of attractions, where to stay, where to eat, etc. without any organization, this book give you beautiful itineraries of how can you spend half a day in different parts of Kyoto. it suggests different attractions that you can visit based on your tastes, along with small gems that the big guidebooks are completely unaware of. Without this book, it would have been much more difficult for me to figure out how to spend my time in Kyoto. Now I just need to select a part of Kyoto and then select an itinerary that I think I'll enjoy the most.
Someone criticized that this book has too much information for a week-long traveler but I very much disagree. I thought it was perfect for my 6-day trip, and I enjoyed Kyoto so much because this book helped organize my tour perfectly, that I plan to take another week long trip to Kyoto later this year.
Overall, DO NOT GO TO KYOTO WITHOUT THIS BOOK - you'll be missing out big time!

A highly detailed and unique guide to ancient Kyoto

This must be the most detailed guide to ancient Kyoto available in English language. It probably contains too much information for a first time visitor on a short trip but it should be valuable to someone planning to spend more than just a a couple of days in Kyoto.
Pros:
1. Includes many temples and locations for which very little information is available elsewhere.
2. Multiple highly detailed maps in color, including a large folded map of Kyoto and the surrounding areas.
3. Color photographs on almost every page (the print quality is OK but not spectacular).
4. Rich historic detail.
Cons:
1. The book is quite heavy to carry around.
2. No kanji names.
3. Best sites are not clearly highlighted (a star rating or something similar would have helped).
4. The writing is rather dry and not particularly entertaining.
Overall, this book is a highly detailed and unique source of information for someone deeply interested ancient Kyoto and willing to spend a week or so walking around the hidden parts of city.
