Very informative

This volume is not only very comprehensive in its scope, but delivers a compact yet thorough introduction to many areas of linguistics and language research. It is not too difficult for the lay-person to read, yet comprehensive enough to be used for academic purposes. Well structured, well researched, and well written. It is my go-to book of choice when it comes to linguistics. If it cannot answer my quiries, it can usually point me in the right direction and suggest further reading.

Essential reference
By Watching and waiting
Everyone interested in language should own this book. It is wide-ranging, accurate, lucid, engagingly written, well illustrated, and reasonably priced. I will be giving a short Elderhostel-type lecture course on language this fall (I am a retired linguist) and wanted to have the current edition of this book as a backup in case one of the participants asks me a question I can't answer off the top of my head.

Hoped-for update of a classic arrives!

David Crystal, who should be named a national treasure in the UK, has answered the request for an update of this classic. There is no other source that provides a comprehensive look at language in such an accessible way to the interested layperson. Love the detail and visuals...plenty of supporting material in the sidebars to provide interesting places to wander on the way to a better understanding of basic linguistic concepts and the role of language in culture. The text, true to an encyclopedia's form, is dense but Crystal clear.

A marvelous book!

Seven Voices is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet Latin America's greatest generation of authors. I felt like I was sitting down at a table with Gabriel García Márquez or staying at Neruda's summer house as a private guest. I wish my professors had used this book as a companion text in my Modern Latin American Literature survey - it would have really helped me to understand the context that informed some of my favorite works of fiction. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves literature.

Originally conceived as a biography based on family interviews and historical research, Walls found herself filling in too many blanks for Half Broke Horses to remain a work of nonfiction, so she assumed Smith's indomitable voice and set out to write a novelistic recreation of Smith's unconventional life. Most critics were captivated by Smith's earthy, straightforward style, despite the steady stream of repetitive axioms intermingled with her antics. Only the Washington Post seemed thoroughly disappointed, lamenting that "this book is no Glass Castle." Though Smith, "a gumption-packin' ranch gal whose pluck never quits" (New York Times), may not rise to the intensity of Walls's troubled, nomadic parents, Half Broke Horses nevertheless tells the heartwarming story of an irrepressible woman who carved her own destiny.

Everything Good is Worth Waiting For!

Jeannette Walls struck gold when she published her personal memoir, "The Glass Castle, a few years back. Her own unusual upbringing touched a spot in people's hearts and minds. I highly recommend the book for schools especially for teens. When you look at Jeannette Walls, you see a sophisticated and intelligent woman who looked like she came out of private boarding schools. The reality is that Jeannette came from poverty where her parents' roaming lifestyle led to them even being homeless on the streets.

In this book, Jeannette wants to write about her mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, but ends up writing about her mother's mother, Lily Casey Smith, who herself was quite a character. Her maternal grandmother was born in 1901 in the Southwest. Like her descendents such as Jeannette and Rosemary, she defied conventional living. She became a school teacher during World War I in Arizona and living in Chicago where she worked as a servant and went to school.

Jeannette writes lovingly about her grandmother and brings her character to life. Lily's life was no picnic and her early years on the ranch with her book-smart father, mother, and siblings-Buster and Helen provide an interesting portrait of life in the American Southwest before World War I.

It's interesting since Jeannette Walls last surprised us with her memoirs to note that she is no longer a social or gossip columnist in New York City's Upper West Side. She and her husband have traded their city lives for a country life in Northern Virginia complete with their own set of beloved horses.

Just Read It ....

This is not as good as her previous book, "The Glass Castles," which I could not put down. This book is a "true-life novel" based on Walls' grandmother, her mother's mother. And it is a wonderful book. Lily Casey Smith was no lily-livered woman who fainted at the slightest urge (Lily's mom did do that on occasion). Lily was the oldest child in her family and by the age of 6 she was helping her father break in horses, a no easy feat for a child, let alone a grown man. Lily was a woman in every sense of the word ... practical, no-nonsense, hard-working and honest. Even though Walls is writing a novel based on her grandmother's life, Walls' words bring the woman to life in every word of the page.

This is a different writing style from Walls' memoir, where it was a thoughtful prose designed to get the reader to read more into a childhood that was hard and filled with parents who couldn't stay put in one place nor could they raise their children. The children raised themselves. In this book, Lily was written to be a tough woman who had faced desperate times ... such as hiding bootleg liquor underneath her son's crib. She did what she could to make ends meet. Even her marriage to Big Jim was practical though I sense through Walls' writing that there was love and mutual respect between the two. Lily is the example of feminism in its best ... she pulled no punches into doing anything. She didn't shy away from speaking her mind even though it did cost her job twice.

Walls has a talent where people and their distant stories just come to life. For awhile there, I was so interested in this novel that I kept forgetting that parts of it is made up since Walls admitted that she never talked with her grandmother so she was filling in the blanks. Lily Casey Smith comes alive in this book and what a wonderful tribute to a woman who is part of Jeannette Walls' heritage. What a rich heritage that is too.

Half Truth Stories

Jeannette Walls new book "Half Broke Horses" is an enthralling, hard to put down book, written by a brilliant writer. But the book suffers from that most modern of flaws, an inability and actually even a positive embargo on emotions and consequent moral judgments or shadings.

"Half Broke Horses" with Lily, its heroine, a real life pioneer woman, could be the next "I Remember Mama" or "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". But I'm sure Walls and all other modern writers would rather die than be compared to either of those, which would surely be regarded by modern critics as overly sentimental.

So, what we're left with is a book that is a great yarn, with fascinating details about the American Southwest at the turn of the century, told by an immensely talented and skilled writer, that lacks one thing: the pulse of human feeling. There's plenty of sweat, and that makes the characters very admirable, but no blood, and that makes them a little dry and depressing. Events that would scar any normal human heart happen without even drawing a drop of blood or tears or sighs.

And yet the events of her life show that Lily did many things that required courage, strength, love, and dedication, and that heartbreak touched her life more than once. But not only does the author not dwell upon Lily's feelings and the emotions that must have kept her going or threatened to sink her, they are never mentioned. The result is the book's tone becomes like listening to someone suffering from low level depression drone on about their life. Arid, dry, a downer.

The author seems to admire Lily's lack of feeling, as if the best human beings can aspire to is to ignore their emotions. And that may be how Lily got through her daunting and difficult life. But since her emotional distance from herself and others may have contributed to her troubles, it also distances us from her story, which starts to seem like a long series of half truths, with many of the good parts, the meaty parts left out.

There are hints that Lily's Irish father has a contentious nature and is always ready to fly off the handle and do something stupid, inconsiderate or violent. And the way Lily keeps getting fired may be from a similar disposition. A temper like that certainly is indicative of some passion in her makeup. But, she acknowledges it only in regards to minor incidents in her life.

But, even hampered by the modern critical sensibility, which cannot seem to stomach the sturm and drang of real life, Walls' writing is so magnificent, she's such a natural storyteller that you forgive her everything.

My advice is don't miss this book. You'll enjoy it despite it's drawbacks.

About the Author
Andrea Lunsford is Emerita Professor of English at Stanford University and is on the faculty at the Bread Loaf School of English. Her scholarly interests include contemporary rhetorical theory, women and the history of rhetoric, collaboration, style, and technologies of writing. She’s received the Braddock and Shaughnessy Awards, and in 1994 she received the CCCC Exemplar Award. She is currently at work on The Norton Anthology of Rhetoric and Writing.

Michal Brody is a linguist, independent scholar, and lecturer. She was a founding faculty member of the Universidad de Oriente in Yucatán, Mexico, and teaches now at Sonoma State University and San Francisco State University. Her scholarly work centers on language pedagogy and politics in the United States and Mexico. She’s the author (with Keith Walters) of What’s Language Got to Do with It? and coauthor (with Richard Bullock and Francine Weinberg) of The Little Seagull Handbook, and the editor of the Everyone’s an Author Tumblr site and They Say / I Blog.

Lisa Ede is Emerita Professor of English at Oregon State University, where she directed the Center for Writing and Learning and taught courses in composition, rhetoric, and literacy studies. She’s received the Braddock and Shaughnessy Awards for her research on audience and classical rhetoric. Her recent books include Situating Composition: Composition Studies and the Politics of Location and (with Andrea Lunsford) Writing Together: Essays on Collaboration in Theory and Practice.

Beverly Moss is Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University, where she teaches in the Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy program, and is on the faculty at the Bread Loaf School of English. Her research and teaching interests focus on community literacy, composition theory and pedagogy, and writing center theories and practices. Her books include Literacy across Communities and A Community Text Arises: A Literate Text and a Literacy Tradition in African American Churches.

Carole Clark Papper recently retired from the Department of Writing Studies and Composition at Hofstra University, where she directed the University Writing Center. Previously, she served for many years as the Director of the Ball State University Writing Program (winner of the CCCC Certificate of Excellence for 2006-2007). Her scholarly interests include visual literacy, composition theory and pedagogy, and writing center theories and practices.

Keith Walters is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Portland State University, where he teaches sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Previously, he taught in the Linguistics Department at the University of Texas at Austin and in the English Department at Ohio State. Much of his research has focused on issues of language and identity in Tunisia, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer, and in the Arab world more broadly. He’s the coauthor of two other textbooks, Everything’s an Argument with Readings and What’s Language Got to Do with It?

In process modelling, knowledge of the process under consideration is typically partial with significant unknown inputs (disturbances) to the model. Disturbances militate against the desirable trait of model reproducibility. "Grey-box" identification can assist, in these circumstances, by taking advantage of the two sources of information that may be available: any invariant prior knowledge and response data from experiments.

Practical Grey-box Process Identification is a three-stranded response to the following questions which are frequently raised in connection with grey-box methods:

• How much of my prior knowledge is useful and even correct in this environment?

• Are my experimental data sufficient and relevant?

• What do I do about the disturbances that I can’t get rid of?

• How do I know when my model is good enough?

The first part of the book is a short review of the theoretical fundamentals of grey-box identification, focussing particularly on the theory necessary for the software presented in the second part. Part II puts the spotlight on MoCaVa, a MATLAB®-compatible software tool, downloadable from springeronline.com, for facilitating the procedure of effective grey-box identification. Part III demonstrates the application of MoCaVa using two case studies drawn from the paper and steel industries. More advanced theory is laid out in an appendix and the MoCaVa source code enables readers to expand on its capabilities to their own ends.

Practical Grey-box Process Identification will be of great interest and help to process control engineers and researchers and the software show-cased here will be of much practical assistance to students doing project work in this field.

1971 appointed (by the king) Professor of the chair of Automatic Control at Linkœping Technical Institute.
1972 - 1996 Professor in Automatic Control at the Royal Institute of Tecknology (KTH) in Stockholm.
1972 - 1988 Head of the Department of Automatic Control,
Member of the board of the school of Technical Physics, and Member of the faculty of KTH.
